Awhile back I had a post where I installed air conditioning in my Type 4 powered Squareback with an automatic transmission.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
I had to pull my DCNFs off, because they just wouldn't work right with the AC and the auto transmission. I ended up putting my old ICTs on, and it was a struggle to get them to work as well. It turns out that while the car was sitting and I was installing the AC, the Vacuum Modulator on the trans failed. Therefore, I was sucking the ATF out of the transmission, which threw the jetting out the window. After completing some other projects that needed my attention, I was finally able to get back to this one, and it is working great.
It took a little while to complete because I noticed that I had a small air leak between one manifold and the head. I tried sanding the manifold on a flat surface, and many different sealing techniques, but couldn't get rid of the leak. So I ended up making a holding fixture to mount the manifold to the mill, and took a couple of thousandths off. Leak gone.
Also, since when the AC is on, the engines RPMs drop a little, I added a throttle solenoid to kick the RPMs back up a little. It probably would have been fine with a manual transmission, but sitting at a stoplight in drive with the AC on, caused the engine to slow down too much for my taste. Of course, I had to reinstall the kick down switch as well.
Here is another view.
I had forgotten how much smoother the engine ran, and the power difference between the two carb setups, but it is like night and day. I still need to adjust the transmission pressures though. The vacuum signature between the two setups is totally different. Right now I can't shift into 3rd gear, and it staying in 3rd below 40 mph, without lifting the throttle. It's kind of fun though, its like you're hot rodding everywhere. That's tomorrow's project, its been running around 105 here, and I'll take the comfort over a little throttle work any day. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Hi, you are happy with DCNF's? I'm planning on building a type 1 motor for my type 3 and am considering using DCNF's. _________________ VW fan & Real Estate Agent at www.argyproperty.com.au

After I got all of the bugs worked out, I love them. They are shorter then the IDFs so you have more clearance, which is a big deal for the type 3. My car has an automatic trans, so Idle speed is supposed to be around 900 rpm, but I am actually idling closer to 700. No shake, or shimmy, and when I drop it in drive, there is no noticeable drop in RPM. However, like the Weber progressive, there are a couple of different models out there. There is the generic DCNF that come in kits.
Then there are the DCNFs that were configured for the Ferraris
The Ferrari version has a step in the throat, and you MUST install velocity stacks with this model.
The only drawback to the DCNFs, is that there is not as much jetting info out there compared to the IDFs. Here is a link to my installation. It was on a Type 4 engine, but most of the info will cross over.

When i see the title of this thread,
I just can't help but think,
That DCNFs never went out of style in the first place.

In my book that is true. Once you get them setup they're gold. Good power and smooth. I'm not driving it right now. It's the first week of the semester back, and instructors have to fight for parking space just like the students. So to keep my Square out of the battle, I'm driving my son's Altima. This thing has no torque. I know that from 0 - 70 my Square would take it. The Square actually rides better too. Can you tell that I miss it _________________ 69 road Bug 2110
