So I have a question. I’ve been seeing how people put a type 1 engine on the later buses. I know most people are against it here.. I’m not trying to pick a fight with anyone. But my question is can the same thing be done with an automatic bus? I’m not a mechanic so I probably will never do this but just wondering if it can be done? Will it be too slow? I have driven a Mexican bus before with a 1600 engine and it was cool. Couldn’t really tell a difference. |

Find a Vanagon torque converter, I would have to search for it to verify but I think you want to one with an "X" stamped on one of the mounting bosses. I think the one with and "H" will work as well but never tried that one. These later TC will let the engine rev higher and make more HP when you are trying to get going from a stop. |

make sure you are smog legal if you are later than 1975. Also don't assume that the smog laws here won't change to go all the way back to the 1968 model year at some point. Technically they can take a 1968 or later car off the road if they see smog tampering. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

can it be done, yes
but not in Cali.
it would require a 'universal' case or bore a hole in the T1 bellhousing for access to the torque converter bolts
it would require a TIII flex plate.
and much DIY handy work. |
