Hi all. I am almost at the end of a 11/2 year restoration of a 1968 westy. I am waiting for it to come back from the body shop with a new coat of paint and so I am getting the top ready. I first scuffed the whole top with red scotchbrite to see how it was. It needed more so the lugage rack was hit with 120 grit all around and the top was scuffed with 80 grit all around . then it was sprayed with 2 coats of spi epoxy primer , this is important so that it gets a good adhesion to the top. then the next day I shot 2 coats of rustoleum flat white so it doesn't have the gloss of the epoxy. and the epoxy isn't UV resistant.

If the Westy comes back from the painters looking as good as the pop top, you're going to have a fantastic looking bus! Good work on the top. It's not easy, but it's important to do.

Please post pics of it when it gets back from the body shop. You know how much we all salivate over new work. Laughing

thanks man. I thought about spraying the bus myself , but being a cabinetmaker not a body guy I thought I would leave it to the pros. Its been there 7 weeks this Tuesday!! I saw it last sat and it is coming along good. I did the new rear corners and lower nose welding and he is smoothing everything out and base and clear. I cant wait to get it back.

I'm impressed that a cabinet maker can weld, too. Wink

Where did you learn to weld? I need to replace corners, battery tray, and front floor soon. But I need to learn how to MIG weld first.

I used to work at a stair company. We made circular staircases wood and steel . I used to play around with the welder there and the guys that knew what they were doing taught me a bit. I had a 71 sportsmobile then and replaced some rocker metal and dogleg parts. Now I have a house and garage and I got a Hobart mig welder 120vlt. it works awesome .

My buddies and I used to meet up in Joshua tree for almost 10 years straight and climb for a week. I haven't been out for a few years ,I miss it. we used to fly into palm spring then drive up to the park.
