I got my “new” junkyard doors dissembled and started/finished the rust repair on one. Turns out the blue pair of doors are 10/59 and are Indigo blue. It’s interesting because there are no major differences but many minor ones.
The top three doors in the picture below are all junk. Two are warped beyond used from me welding it before I knew you don’t want to do a 1ft bead at once the bare steel looked great in the Junkyard but was covered in bondo and is tin canned, warped and was an utter hack and the whole frame was bent on it. But is was super solid and straight at the bottom corner I need for repairs
If you look, you can see the check rod is a different style on the blue door. There are also some different pieces not pictured
here’s the rust
Welded in. I used a smashed up but rust free door for repairs

Yeah, the check rod looks similar to what I have on my '61 I think. _________________ 1961 Typ 117 (LHD Deluxe Ragtop)

Interesting! I wonder when they made the change
Door updates, when you find rust in one door, another door presents its rust. Wait, that’s not how the saying goes
Anyways, I realized my second door is really bad and I’m looking for another drivers side door. I will fix it if I can’t find one but I know I will warp it if I try to fix it going down the same hole.
What was interesting is I found someone had done some lead body filler on the one door that’s rusty
Then I started to sand the one door, pretty straight and I realized I was going to have to strip it bare. I found someone (I’m assuming) used chemical stripper, let it flash rust, used RED OXIDE PRIMER over the rusted metal and painted the car Ford tractor blue
Good news! I stripped the paint off with the wire wheel, covered in flash rust but no major damage and they used almost no filler and there were no surprises. I have one good passenger door that’s correct for my beetle out of 6 extra doors

I try not to use mine as a "reference" since it was owned for a long time by a VW mechanic, which means it works well and is in good condition but I don't assume anything is a good year-specific reference since those guys always had a bunch of stuff lying around from all kinds of years.
Wolfsburg West lists their check rod hardware kit as 62-79 but some other places list 61 as the start. I haven't found a specific date but haven't looked that deeply. For your 64, though, that should be a good ballpark estimate, especially now that you know the way each looks. _________________ 1961 Typ 117 (LHD Deluxe Ragtop)

Thank you! They always were making slight changes through the years and it’s interesting how there are so many minute details. I’m going to leave it since it’s such a minor detail and this car isn’t going to be perfect, I doubt anyone would notice or care. _________________ 1964 sunroof Beetle Restoration "Herbie"

The image by the hippy tree is soo cool. Something about no doors... Nice! |
Thanks! It’s an interesting tree to look around and it even has a park bench. It’s also in the middle of nowhere.
No doors is fun, but a bit scary I actually decided to put doors on today so I fell like I can go more places and having no doors can be a bit much breeze if it’s cooler out. I also can take it to do stuff with friends. But I’m working on making it more legal and safe. I added seat belt for the passenger seats. I added an outside mirror, fuel gauge doors, passenger seat, rear seat back, and interior panels
