Does anyone have pictures of the difference for early vs late(non
split case) chassis? I don't know what I have right now. Can't trust the chassis serial number! I have a split case rebuilt and ready to install and don't really know if the frame or current trans has been modified.
Thanks in advance for the help. _________________ Corvair powered ManxClone |

The only difference on the chassis would be the front transaxle mount which could be solved by changing the transaxle nosecone to fit the type of mount on your chassis. |

Thanks for the advice. I was just wondering if I could get some idea of what I was getting into before I start tearing things apart. It may be as simple as changing the front mount or more involved with changing the nosecone and hockey stick. _________________ Corvair powered ManxClone |

Changing the front mount is a welding job. The nose cone just bolts on.
If its an option, I would weld on a late model mount.
However, I'd also run the latest model transaxle I could find with standard upgrades, but at least one with full synchro.
If I was running a Corvair engine on a VW swingaxle transaxle(as your signature block mentions), it would be the last year transaxle with two side covers or a reinforced White Rhino case. I'd also install a transaxle mid-mount.

If you have this style mount on chassis (61 to 69 (maybe 70)) its most popular and easiest to work with..
Uses this style rubber mount...
IF you have this style rubber mount it is a 70 (mabe 71) and later... No so good, but will work...

Hey Dale, do you have good pictures of the '59 down front frame mount and rubber mount? At a glance they look similar, but when on a chassis they look quite different.
The '61 to ?? mount sits a bit below the torsion tube, you can see that in the far side of mount that welds to the chassis. The ?? to '59 front mount comes strait out from the rear torsion housing. The '60 only is a couple of studs coming out of the torsion housing.
There are other hints as to what year the chassis is. Are the rear shock mounts strait or twisted to about a 45 degree angle? Does the chassis have pads in the rear shock towers for the rubber rear suspension stop? _________________

The mounts run as follows:
- up to 1959
1960
1961 - 1972
1973 - 1979
The last mount design is the strongest for the nose cone in stock form. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Joe, You ever seen a prefabbed 71 and later mount which can be welded to a torsion housing? |

'71 and '72 are the same as '70 and earlier. Do you mean '73 and later?
If you refer to '73 and later, yes I have. Been a few years and I have not searched for them, just cut them off of a bad chassis and grafted them on where I need them. That stock rubber mount of the last design will not separate like the earlier mount will, no matter the beating it is given. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I had a friend with a Steven's Sandbuggy in high school ( around 1983 ) his buggy was based on a 1960. It sat at a local garage for weeks because theycould not locate a transmission for him. The '60 had a one year mount. |

This is why I come here! Those pictures are exactly what I was looking for. Also the dates will help me dating my chassis. (Unless the mount was replaced!) Thanks again. _________________ Corvair powered ManxClone |

That mount's so rare, I can't even believe you found its picture! Any idea of where or how I could get ahold of one like that with good rubber in it?
Also, what do you guys think about the EMPI 9520 solid front mount? My feeling is that it'd put unnecessary stress on tranny nose cone. So, what do you think about urethane?

Urethane usually breaks fairly quickly
Solid transmit noise. |

CB Perf Rhino mounts have a good reputation but mid-mounts are best

Not in favor of poly mounts ... Only place they seem to work is suspension bushings where they are supported on full circumference, absolutely do no use them on shift couplers and steering couplers...
With solid mounts I usually use front trans strap on transaxle case to relieve some of the cantilever pressure on nose cone..
