Installing 12V gauges in a 6V system requires a DC to DC converter. The converters go for a few dollars and can power several gauges with gauge lamps. I mounted the converter on the back of a gauge and wired it to a terminal strip for easy installation. The digital tachometer is mounted on a second panel which is also powered form the converter. If you want the 12V lamps to go on with the headlight switch use a small 6V relay.

You can install an LED and resistor (620 ohms for 12V) in burned out 6 or 12V lamp sockets. They can be used in 6 or 12V applications and any color can be used.
