I got my hands on two AFMs from a California of the same year (1981), mines a federal. They were cheap so I snatched them up as spares or figured I would just sell them if I couldn't use them (also got 2 ECUs as well for a california but I assumed those won't work in my van).
I've seen some posts about people with california engines putting in AFMs from a federal but not the other way around. I'm curious if this would work in a federal engine? They are both 7 pins (my old AFM and the new ones), look identical but I know things aren't always what they appear
Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, I've searched through the topics and didn't see anything on this specifically.
Thanks! |

Just my guess but I'd say yes it should work in either California or Federal version vehicle. The AFM is a sensor/meter. The ECU uses the meter output to adjust the fuel mixture. If there is any difference between CA emission controls and Federal emission controls, it should be at the ECU, not the sensors.
- In the "smarts" not the "parts."

I've been told by a supplier of remanufactured AFMs that a 77-79 AFM from a bus will also work in the aircooled vanagons even though it's not listed as being compatible.
Curious if anyone has successfully used a california afm in the federals. Is there a known difference between the two AFMs that would cause it to not work? |

i was googling around on this then my browser quit; lost the links. One led to a page showing a copy of a Bosch catalogue. For 80-83 2.0 Vanagon engines, it showed at least 3 different part numbers for the AFM.
This link may have some info for you

And somewhere in this web site is an explanation of the AFM, adjustments one could make to it etc. :

An AFM rebuilders point of view will be somewhat different than the end user or mechanic; e.g. for the 2.0, they see a core that can be rebuilt to whatever specs. Yes the various 2.0 AFM's may fit, and "work" but there could be subtle differences based upon the ECU's needs.
