| Just curious if there is a special procedure to remove the crank pulley nut? I want to install the hand crank nut, which I have, without removing the belt if thats possible. Been so long since I have pulled apart an engine, 70's, I just don't want to screw something up. Also, what size wrench will I need, I have a 24mm, and it's not big enough. |

And you don't need to remove the belt.

The stock crank pulley nut is removed with a 30mm wrench. If you already have the rear tin for the hand crank nut (with the hole in it), you can use a 30mm socket with an extension that passes to outside the rear bumper with your ratchet behind the rear bumper.
Remove the nut with the transmission in gear, brake on.

| Thanks guys, the tin with the hole was in the car when I bought it, just need to get the 30mm wrench. I know it was discussed this year, but what was the torque on the nut? I think it was 36-38 ft. lbs. |

| I found an old post answered by Al Acapulco that the torque is 25-36 ft. lbs. thanks. |

| Well I just did it, started awesome on 2nd crank. It's 30mm to remove the normal bolt at the crank, 36mm to torque the hand start cog.[/img][youtube][vimeo][/vimeo][/youtube] |

| For those of us with an alternator, and hand crank setup is basically useless, right? I mean, if the point of a hand crank is to be able to start the car with a dead battery . . . |

Hey Thing7,
dang yall couldn't get the old one off? That sucks!
Mine came off fairly easy, I didn't have a breaker bar but my torque wrench is long enough it worked like one.
I wonder if you used a impact wrench gun on it would that work?
And Captain;
Even with a alternator, if the battery is dead enough it wont crank the starter, (using the hand crank) the battery should have enough power to spark the plugs, just like doing a "push start" I'd think.

| I tend to agree with doublecanister, if the battery is working, then what's the point of the hand crank? My nut came off fairly easy, and it has never been off since the motor was rebuilt by the PO in 1996. I know for sure that the PO was an absolute fanatic for proper torques, as am I. |

Not to hijack the thread,but...
I just installed a stock size pulley and sand seal from Empi (torque spec is 33 ft.lb.,). Anyhow, I used the longer bolt and it's hanging out about a 16th of an inch when fully torqued.
I didn't try the old bolt and flat washer yet - anyone else seen this problem? |

Unfortunately it wouldn't break loose. The guy that tried told me if the engine comes out he could try the impact gun on it. Kind of bummed because I wanted to install that hand crank nut |

Maybe put the socket on the bolt, and then pass an extension through the hole that's in the bumper for the hand crank and hit it with the impact gun.

I have the hole in my bumper, but not the "Tin". You can see in the picture I posted earlier that I removed the back piece of tin (mine only had 4 screws) - a lot easier then pulling the engine.

I was just adding my 2 cents to Thing7's problem with the stuck pulley bolt.
I don't have a bolt that accepts the hand crank installed, so when I reinstall my tin it won't matter that it blocks the hole.
Sorry for the confusion... |
