This is an AC Vanagon, but figured this forum may have some responses - same engine as late bays. Two videos, one before valve adjust, one after (with the Blue gloves). Engine warm, new cap & rotor, timing correct, valves set to zero C, then 1.5 turns preload; hydraulic lifters.

The weird rattle noise is most likely related to valve train, but what? Turns out #1 & #2 cyl were a bit too much preload (3T+), and #3 & #4 were a bit too loose, 1/2 to 1 T. After the adjustment, the noise changes a bit but...
Ideas?

Dump some Marvel Mystery Oil into the crankcase and let it run for a bit and it should quiet down. You probably had your adjusters set at 2 turns and backed them off to 1 1/2 turn and they will need a while to pump back up.

Also starting an engine cold and then letting it run for only a short while is a sure way to get the lifters to leak down and then rattle bad the next time the engine is started.

Running synthetic oil will help keep the lifters (and the entire engine) clean and working their best. A high viscosity index oil like a 5w40 or 5w50 will help the lifters pump up quickly in a cold engine.

fwiw the VW factory supplement on hydraulic lifters says tell the customer lifter noise is normal, just drive the car and it will eventually go away. Really it does say that.
