Hey guys, quick question, what is the main difference on earlier auto tranny VS the later one (1984+)

As I do Subaru conversion I wonder.

Ratio? Oil cooler?

Cheers, Ben

I believe the only difference is in the lack of ATF cooler ports on the air cooled Vanagon transaxle. All else is essentially the same for 1980 through 1991 in parts catalogs.

On the later transmissions the torque converters had a higher stall speed. The change was made somewhere around 82-84, don't know for sure. Both the "Z" and the "H" converters had the higher stall speed. Higher stall speed = more zip out of the gate.

Thanks, I wonder about those oil cooler ports?

Available to install an oil cooler.

Can't help you on that one, would like to know if they can be easily added.
