Hey guys. I have concerns about coolant flow from overflow to expansion tank (reverse). I checked my hose between the tanks and it seemed good. Anyhow I think it might be my cap. Where do I find this? I checked van Cafe and gowesty. Is this the cap for a 82 diesel?

Now might be a good time to upgrade to a metal pressure tank. Getting rid of the plastic tank is a major improvement IMO. I have had two plastic tanks split over the years and one deform from heat and pressure. Have also had the stock low water level sender crack and fall apart. |

The VW van part has been NLA for a long time, but the cap from other old VW/Audis works fine.

Those are pretty much NLA now too. I used to get them from VanCafe.
However Ken at Vanagain.com lists the cap.

Thank you so much Mark! Just submitted an order! And wow - only $2 for USPS first class shipping. I usually feel robbed on shipping prices from van part vendors

Ahh I saw those expensive boxes! I am on a college budget right now and that upgrade will have to wait. Thanks for the recommendation though! Hopefully I can get another year or two out of mine...Or until I can drop a Subaru engine in it _________________ Brandon

There is a Mercedes part that is a substitute.
I will dig it out today for you, you can have my old cap (Mercedes) but it isn't worth the postage.
Swapping the old tank for a later one is not to difficult to do. There is a bracket available somewhere. Greaseworks.com used to sell it.

Same twist-on pressure cap used on old cars up until the late '70s, get it at any parts store.
BTW if you post about diesel you should put ‘diesel’ in the subject. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

If an old style cap is actually a perfect fit he could get a 7 psi cap and lessen the chance the pressure is going to blow up the tank or any of the aging hoses. |

I don't have a diesel. I didn't realize that this was a diesel cap until research. _________________ Brandon

There are two styles of the aluminum tank, as the mounting of them are different. The diesel and early 83.5 WC models are the same, while later WC years are of a different style. Found this out with my early 83.5 when I went to swap it out. I had to locate a later type mounting bracket. The both fit onto the heat shield mounting points the same. _________________ 83.5 233K. So you guys remove the cap to check coolant?
I guess if everything works right....you should be able to pull the license plate down and make sure the overflow tank has coolant _________________ Brandon

If you have a diesel pressure tank on a gas engine then you should replace it with the stock round tank and sell me your diesel tank. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |
