Personally I would replace axle.... Cleaning up threads and praying may not keep drum and wheel on...

Well the splines from the backside of the drum look ok. The 2nd picture with the drum still on looked bad...must have been a popsicle illusion |

This pic tells me you have more problems.... It appears you are running long spline axles and with short spline drums... See hammered (silvery) area???...... Should not look like that... It indicates loose nut on axle....
Also in pics there is exposed splines on a axles with drums in place, you do have all the correct spacers on axle and spacer between nut and drum???? Please tell me you do!!!

IN image of drum it looks as if spacers were not thick enough as drum was sliding back and forth on axles... Splines on axle and in drum are polished look from movement as if axle nut was not tight... Large axle nut torques to 217 ft-lbs (294.2129 N.m) ... And ADDITIONAL torque to get hole in axle lined up with slots in nut for cotter pin....NOT loosen nut till you get hole and slot aligned for cotter pin...
Also were you using pneumatic impact to put nuts back on with???... Be cause it was definitely cross threaded and I have serious doubt you are not going to do that much damage with "hand tools"... It should have been easy turning up to point nut contacted spacer and drum...

Anti seize Works good on threads to keep them from galling like that. Welcome to the world of what the PO did to your bug. |

if it's a lot hp budget bug,I would shorten the spacer so a new nut would grabb all the good splines that are there.then fix/deburr/remove the fucked up threads and install the nut to see how much the spacer needs shortening then shoprten it 1.5 rev less, install the nut, torque and go about your bizness. if it's a high hp bug change the axle.and the drums and all the other dead crap you find on both sides. |

where should I buy a new axle if all else fails? |
Classifieds.
There are three different axles for a beetle. Short axles, long axles with short splines, and long axles with long splines. The drums and other hardware don't all mix. You need to know what all the parts on the car are (axle tubes, axles, drums, and brakes) before you start buying parts. Not as complicated as it sounds. Post some more pics so we can see what you were supposed to have.. _________________ modok wrote:
