We just purchased this bug. It runs and drives, but doesn't stay in reverse. It appears the engine has been replaced, because there is no number in the usual location. Body is in good shape, haven't pulled the carpet to determine the condition of the floor yet.
We intend for it to be a daily driver but not highway, at least not for now. Could you guys take a look at the photos and let me know of things we should be concerned with right away? Especially the missing engine tin. There are two types - with openings for air hoses to the cooler, and without. Why are both offered, and how do you decide what's appropriate?
Thanks!

You don't need the engine Tim with the hole cutouts of you're not going to use heater boxes - which seems like you don't currently have. Before you drive the car please install the tins/seals so you don't cook your engine.
Can you take more pictures of the carburetor? Never seen one mounted in such a way on a VW bug. _________________ **1971 Super Project

Having heat seems like a good idea to me. If we were thinking about replacing it, should we get the tins with the holes and hook up the hoses to the tin and cap them there for now?
Here are some carb photos. Hope I got good angles and light, otherwise let me know.

If you plan to have heat in the future, buy the rear tin with the holes and cap them off there; then, find a non-butchered shroud or fix the snout on the one you have and cap both snouts off. That way the cold and hot sides of the engine will be separated, you won't be losing cooling air and you can later fit heater boxes and heating and connect them to the engine. Strictly speaking, when running j tubes you should also use "industrial" tins on the underside of the cylinders to re-create the ducting normally made up from the bottom sled-shaped tin and the heat exchanger. _________________ cars:
