PostPosted: Wed Aug 16, 2017 12:28 pm    Post subject: VW Truck Reply with quote

I have owned my VW truck for 33 yrs. but never did anything with it , now I need to find out what year it is before I get too involved in this project. I have a portion of a cab card but the mice destroyed some of the facts. The serial number is intact and it says 893013. The tag near the spare tire holder also says 893013, and the tag in the engine compartment says somethings as to where it was man. also type 26 also 893013.
So I have tried comparing it to chassis numbers that are posted and I can not figure it out.
I have thought that it was a 1956 for all of these years but a friend said that the engine was a 40 hp and in 56 they had a 36 hp?
I can try and attach pics or could add pics if anyone reply.
Thanks in advance and keep in mind I am a newbe

From the Bus VIN # listing at https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php
893013 is a Bus from January, 1962

Yes, a '62 would have a 40hp engine originally.
Post some pics and we can give you all the info.
Post a pic of the plate behind the passenger side seat too
This is the "M-code plate" and it has a lot of information on it like production date, colors, and options.
You can also use this page on the site to help decode that plate:
How to read your M-Code / ID plates

A '56 model has bullet front turn signals and very small taillights in the rear.

Does it have front turn signals and taillights like this '62?

Yes the turn and taillights look the same.
I looked through the pages you suggested and didn't find the same info as you but I have an eye issue and reading is difficult.
I do not have pics of front tag but I have the info that is on it
23 01 2
361 071 195 or105

Ok, you definitely have a '62.

Here's a breakdown for you:
23 01 2
Production date
23rd day of 1st month, 1962
January 23, 1962

361 071 195 or105
M-codes
361 = N. American including M168, M181, M192, M199
The 300 series is usually normal stuff like a MPH speedometer, red taillights, overrider bumpers, and so on.
Are you sure it's 361 and not 362?
071 = Second locker hatch for single cab
This means it has doors on both sides of the treasure chest area under the bed
195 = 3-position front seat
This is a normal thing so it's probably 195

UC261 blue 893013
UC = Delivery port - USA, Chicago
261 = Model # (Single Cab)
BLUE = Color , Dove Blue
893013 VIN / Chassis #

I was so sure that it was a 56 and that biased my reading of the M-code and other signals.
Thank you so much!!!
I will head to the truck today and see if 361 or 362. So will that engine be a 6 v or 12 v? Starter engages but not enough power to do more then wiggle the flywheel. It did run when I got it 33 yrs ago and it pulls through by hand..
I do not have a smart phone but when I figure out how to post pics from my desktop I will send some.Lots of rust but everything is there and appears to be original. Guy that I got it from, his daughter lives a few miles from me and shared some hunting stories using that truck in 1968 till I got it.

Please never hook chains up to the bumpers again. Chains around the front beam is much better. Have plenty of bumpers that someone used the bumpers to pull the bus and screwed up the bumper.

For the rear use the torsion bar tube ends that are just forward of the rear tires and inward just a little.

Looks like a nice project!!!

Cool, looks pretty good but with some rust issues.

The engine looks like a fairly original 1962 40hp engine.
It looks like the carburetor got upgraded to a slightly later model at some point
28 PICT-1 vs. a 28 PICT.
Same basic carburetor though.

362 on the M-code plate makes more sense as that is a known code seen on Trucks.
Same as what I said above - it's all the typical N. American options like sealed beam headlights, MPH speedo, red taillights, safety glass windshields, and so on.

Thanks for the help!
Eric, I was also grossed out by the chain on the bumper. I hooked the chain the the torsion bar when I used the skid steer to pull it on the trailer .

I can't decide what I should do with it. I am not a body man, a great jerry rigger and that is great for getting my sailboat back home but a finish carpenter is not what I am.

Just pick something small to do on it, and then another small thing, and so on. Do not look at the whole picture. If you can learn, well you are going to learn more and get skills you did not have before! Laughing
