Greeting!
Hope some can clarify some of the differences between 74, 76 and 78 campers.
I heard the following but may be wrong:
engine: 74's have 1800cc, later ones ( 76, 7 had 2L
Is the 1800cc under-powered for the camper?
The 74' have more cargo room ( area in which one sleeps)
During 74 there was the transition between the flip up table with one leg, vs the large bent pole supporting the table ( these tables are in front of the back seat
Guessing all of these years were fuel injected.
I see a few 1800cc with center carbs, likely progressive - comments on those?
If not hangingon the front of the camper, where does the spare tire go?
what is a comfortable speed of an 1800cc
Thanks!

also realize that westfalias were not the only camper available, or what you will find today when someone is selling a "pop up camper bus"
there were about a half dozen here in the states you will come across regularly. Country Homes, Riviera, Sportsmobile, aw hell, just check this out. my fave thread

And don't count on a particular model year having it's original engine, they interchange easily and it's not uncommon to find a later motor in an earlier bus or vice versa, whatever was cheap at the wrecking yard went in, even if it wasn't best suited for that type.
It's wise to do your homework ahead of time and decide on the ideal year and configuration, but good buses are getting scarce so you may be shopping the rest of your life if you hold out for one in particular. Don't get tunnel vision and pass on one that's really nice but not quite what you are after, sometimes the bus finds you and you end up liking it even more than what you originally wanted. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

athe 1800 cylinder heads became popular as they had the big stock valves and different combustion chamber. Mated to a 2.0 ltr and better cam and exhaust- they became the early version of the CS motor later perfected by Raby-
At the time, all air cooled were being dogged by the feds to clean up their emissions. The results were a down turn in hp- so to keep up VW built more powerful motors that could shed a few pounds of go for some better emissions.
Read up on the various build threads and results sans emissions - and the 1800 can carry its own against most others. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

The Westys are most popular and plentiful, so you get to pay for the popularity. You might consider expanding your search to include Rivieras. Mine has the full width lower bed, and the upper has much more room since the roof pops straight up rather that At an angle like the Westy.
The funny part for me.... I bought my Riviera on eBay kind of spur-of-the-moment. At the time, I hadn't heard what a Riviera was. I thought it was a type of Westy, which is what I wanted. But I've been super happy with it, especially the extra room up top.
One word of caution, though, is a Riviera is about 4 inches taller than a Westy. Mine didn't fit under my old garage door, so I had a new roll- up door installed. Now there's a spacious 1/2" to spare. _________________ -Kent-
