Tiny bit of a story behind this...Found this on CL locally (Thank you, Grey, if you read this) and was driving up to southern VA to pick it up yesterday. Wasn't seriously looking for one, but it was in the back of my mind that I wanted a '50's era beetle to go with our 64, 73, and 79. Starter on my Honda Ridgeline gave out 1/2 way there....a 6 hour wait on parts/repair...Madamoseille magazine ads can be quite interesting when you've read cover to cover 3 times in the ice box waiting room of a small auto repair shop. So, once we got the Honda...drove back home and went up today to tow it home....no problem. Would the experts here please take a look at whether it's reasonably correct?? I do not have the eye or knowledge available here, so I kinda gambled since the price seemed right, IMO, and I didn't have a lot of time (6 hours) to decide......ha. Few things don't work, passenger window, random lights....starts instantly and idles great, though. I find NO rust on it....PTL!!! BTW...if the white color makes it too tough to tell if the fenders are correct, I can get new ones in the shade...

Looks like a good start. The wiring under the front hood looks like it could use some cleaning up. I'd also get rid of the incorrect fuel line going to the carb, and get it off the spark plug wire. Funny how there's various colors in and out, but that's ok. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

Rear apron has been changed.
That means a through inspection of the rear inner fender wells is in order.
Bottoms of the floor pans sure look nice . . . maybe they were replaced? _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

Thank you for the comments. I'm going to order a Bentley for this series, but in the meantime, did they have the 4 fuse block behind the dash and another 2 fuse block near the front drivers side headlamp (inside the trunk next to the spare)? Inspection of the rear fenders...what do I look for?? |

The rear apron was replaced for a reason.
Look for previous accident damage. Rust. Poor repair(s). Ribbed fender mounting flange. Bumper bracket mounts for damage _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

A couple more things to notice . . .
The heater channel is glued to the floor pan.
Lower door hinge screw is missing . . . should look like this http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111805351A
Again . . . possible indicators of extensive repair work. _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

If exhaust are correct, it is a 40hp 61-62 stale air in it. Only engine number can tell. Distributor should be with vacuum, for better fuel economy, and if it is a 009, for better mid range, too.
Looks like a decent car🙂

I'm not gonna fret over extensive repairs....as long as they're well done. It gives me some projects as time rolls on and I consider returning it closer to stock. I'll look more closely at it with the comments above this evening. What would you say it should've been valued at....criiinnnnggggg!!!!!?? |

You have the right attitude regarding the repairs!
You should not concern yourself with what other people think that you should have paid for the car.
Sounds like you wanted a good looking oval window that you can hop right in and enjoy it today... without having to do a load of work on it. And it looks like that's what you bought.
The ability to have fun driving a good-looking classic VW is worth a lot! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

One thing that bothers me....do the glued channels need attention from a welder? I can't do that with my skillset and tools....thanx, mike |

It sorta looks like the floor pans have been replaced . . . and the heater channels have been replaced.
After the two were mated together, a sealant was applied.
If that's case, probably nothing at all to worry about.
Originally, VW used a rubber gasket between the two . . . You might have that in addition to the sealer.
Again, have fun with your nice, "new" Beetle! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

Only pointing out things because owner asked what wasn't correct.
I agree on the 40HP and the car looking decent.
Cost is relative to what you feel comfortable paying. Get in it, drive it, enjoy the heck out of it and watch the little car not only put a smile on your face, but also put a smile on peoples faces at the local cruise nights. _________________ 1956 Oval
