That sounds like a fan shroud hitting a engine mount. Mine had the same noise forever till I did my last rebuild and figured out what was hitting. Hard to tell with the video though. The only reason I say that is the frequency of the low end noise (not the lifters that are also clicking) is just a bit to slow.

Hmm, yes, from my limited experience it does seem plausible to me that the higher "tack-tack-tack-tack" sound is a lifter, but I feel like I hear something else as well that sonds a bit more disqieting. I take it if it is a fan shroud hitting that isn't something that would make it undriveable? I sent it to the gal who sold me the rebuilt haed and she is going to hit me back some time today with an o. from her staff. Probably the only damn way I'll know for sure is to go there and just drive it a bit and see how it reacts. Don't really want to throw a rod and ruin the case, but as you say its probably hard to diagnose with a vid.

sjbartnik, No you're thinking of Idaho. In GA they do things different and shoot all videos on either pecans or peaches (depending on the time of year).

If the worst happens and you blow a case, I have 3 extra, I can strip one down and ship you a short block and whatever I can get in the box Wink

That's my hope. Its just hard to figure out how to even get started. Maybe I ought to sell it and get an ealier one so I can make more use of the "idiot" book, (since that is the category I fall into).

Everything Abscate said applies equally to the earlier ones. Same engine back to '72.

Problem is that I find it a bit too overwhelming. I am not really mechanical by nature and don't learn things all that well from reading books but mainly by doing. As much as I would like to be able to do it all my self, probably unless I have someone who is willing to show me/offer hands on guidance to at least help me get my feet wet I'll never get over that hump of being able to do my own maintenance and such. I haven't been able to find anyone in my area with the time or inclination to do that.

Colin and Robnie do exactly just that. They come to you and train you to work your car.

Itinerant air cooled mechanic

Before you dump too much money in, post some photos of the Van.

Is it rusty?
Is it beat up?
How is the interior?

Air cooled Vans are historically worth less than and are less sought after than Water Cooled Vans.

Don't get too upside down in it.

Hmm, How do I connect up with them?

Cause that would be worth it to me.

Phone message left with daddygad . . .
The video doesn't quite suggest lower end.

I pinged the mods to setup a sticky for referrals to traveling mechanics. There are at least four here and I left two of them off without intended malice or prejudice. Ok, maybe not for Stu.
