- measured at center to fender lip - it sits 18"
- 14" rims with General Grabber AT2 27X8.5
- original springs with OM Emu shocks
- most importantly it has this .. please see pic to compare..

Kinda looks to me like the top has a stamped arm and the bottom has a cast arm.
BUT, hell.... I've never had a syncro so I'm probably wrong.

Stamped arm is early and cast arm is late, don't the exact cut off date for the change. From what I know they should both have the cast arms but they are interchangable as a set(including sway bar links)

Stamped arms were to 88, but in the last Syncros they mixed all parts in Austria.
Or somebody changed them.

My 89 model year has the early control arms too. Another difference I think is the window seals on the earlier 89 vans have the plastic "chrome" strips in them, from later in '89 they are solid black.

According to VW Parts, the Syncro lower arms changed about 1/3 of the way through the 1989 model year. They give an exact vin# for the change.

See!!!
There's the trouble with having more than one of something.
Comparisons.......... you were happy until the second one rolled in.

My 89 had one of each. I suspect someone changed one due to some accident or ? Not surprising as had 196K on it when I bought it.
While I prefer to Cast units, the hardcore off roaders like the stamped one because it gives the lower one more articulation.
I updated my 87 to cast units and sent my cast arms to My friend Burley so they could live on.
When it came to rebuild the front end of 89, I got a set of cast units and changed but of them with all new parts. And again sent the old ones To Burley.
I wouldn't worry about it one way or the other, it's just VW constantly improving their products.
