Hi All,

I need some etiquette type advice here. I searched - didn't find anything.

I know the origin of the term "Westfalia" and that conversions done by Westfalia earn the label "Westfalia" as opposed to a transporter, Vanagon, Wolfsberg, etc. I also know that the term can be used for older VWs buses if they have a pop top and/or camping interior.

My Vanagon started life as a 7 passenger transporter tin top van but now has a professionally installed pop top from a donor Westfalia and some basic improvised camping cabinetry.

My question: Should I put a Westfalia decal on my new pop top? I'm not trying to fool anyone or be a poser but it looks bare without some type of decal on the fiberglass front and back. If not cool to use a Westfalia decal because it's truly not a Westfalia, should I make up a name (I have a couple in mind but my wife doesn't like them) or should I just use "Vanagon" in the Westfalia decal locations?

It's a WestPhalia

You can Phank the Phorum later.

I think you should define the etiquette by doing what you want and telling anyone who cares to go pound sand.

I agree. It's whatever makes you happy. If it was mine I would put the Westfalia sticker on. Visually the only thing you're missing is the side hookups!

All nomenclature rules have been thrown out the window years ago with this group, so call it whatever you like. With the proliferation of offbrand engines very few of these rigs are even VWs any longer. If you're installing Westfalia equipment as per Westfalia specs, then you have a Westfalia, not unlike a Reimo conversion performed by whomever. Just enjoy your rig and you know...whatever. Nobody cares

It is your Vanagon. It has a real Westfalia top. Call it whatever will bring you the most joy.

Even the stickers that you can buy from the common parts vendors are fake. The "L" is not the correct font style. There is an endless game of "correctness".

Stock Westfalia or not only matters to buyers if you ever sell it. Agree on the do what makes you happy. If you want a sticker up there but don't think it deserves a stock sticker, you could make a WESTFAKIA sticker if you bought an extra and got creative with a razor blade.

Really - whatever pleases you is fine.

Oddly, my 84 Westy does not have the Westfalia script on the front, only on the back. I've had it since 'almost new' so I am pretty sure it was never there on the luggage rack.

I won't judge you for mounting a pop top on a tin top. You paid for the right to use the matching sticker Smile

there were also Weekenders that got pop tops, but lacked the full Westy cabinetry.

enjoy your Westy!Smile

Yep, what ever floats your boat! I would put a Westfalia sticker on it.

Weekenders didn't have hookups. Your van looks great!

There are many Westy's running around with rebuilt interiors, drivenachodrive is one such well known example.

Really, I guess I didn't to have to make the conscious decision to put a sticker on my Conversion as the top I put on mine already had a Westfalia sticker on it. Yea VIN would prove it to be fake, but at the end of the day if it was stripped to bare paint could you tell the difference?
So by the same token to those of us who have taken the VC out of our vans, Technically They are no longer SYNCRO's. As it is the VC that is really a Syncro and without it, it is just a 4WD van. So should we all take our Syncro badges off.
Just playing it out, do as you please. Just don't put a Westy badge on a Non Westy top.
Oh and by the way those wheels would look way better in Silver. Just my opinion. They were only black because they wanted contrast through the silver hubcaps. Commercial trucks with just caps had Silver wheels.

Dont do it. It aint a westy and you know it.
Poser westy. Thats what you have.
If the folks in Hanover didnt mean for it to be, it aint.
No way no how.

Your slowly degrading the good westy name. Making a mockery of the fine camper that is The Westfalia Camper Van.

This is a cult and your showing up w fake rosary beads and some non holy water. I wont have it.

Very Happy

They look a little sparse without the sticker, follow your heart. You're pretty creative, make your own sticker. Use the Westfalia font and put your vans name up there or something else maybe? The top looks nice. Props to you and Joel!

How dare you!? HOW DARE YOU!?
Just kidding.
Do what makes you smile.
I'd put Westphalia on the front and Westfalia on the back just to stir the pot.

So I have a second thought on this. The old joke about FI early Corvettes was
" The good news is that 1500 FI vettes and now there are 2500 left" No one is going to the dealer and buying a roof and all the structure and building from scratch. With FI corvettes and tigers and Z28's you can buy all the parts to build a clone.
At least with a Westy conversion you are killing a Westy to make a "Fake Westy" So the surviving number of Westy's is going to be high because they are so usable and sought over. and we are not always setting out to fool anyone but to make our vehicles as practical and usable as possible.
So tell me exactly where does that sticker go?

Stay

My 85 never had it front or rear either and it was picked up in Germany as a Tourist Delivery. I added it because people kept asking if it was one....
