After a catastrophic failure resulting in two cracks, due to driving from a warm garage into below zero in the Wyoming night, we tried the plastic weld gig with no luck. It kept failing. Here is what I expect to be a permanent solution :

The straps are 5" wide .062" aluminum in three pieces, cut to fit. The bonding agent is 3M 5200 fast dry. The paint is VW R902 Arctic white with with clear coat. The ends were installed all at once and allowed to cure, then we cut the cross pieces to fit and installed the next day.

For the record, we have two 95 EVC's in the family. This one is not mine. Hopefully I will not have to do this again on mine. Very Happy

Really nice work! Any chance you could scan the profile of that buck and post it up? I'll bet there are folks here who could really benefit from having that at the ready...for the inevitable.

I could but the profile varies end-to end as well as the width of the top. It is pretty easy make a cardboard female template at your desired location and then trace it onto plywood for the sheet metal shop to use as a form.

Wow. Good work! Any pics of the cracks before they were fixed? Were they transverse across the top and pretty straight?

I don't have pix. One crack was side to side shifting about 2-3" fore and aft. The other crack went from one side about half way across, shifting about 2" fore and aft.

We chose to wrap the half-way crack all the way across for appearance and added insurance.
