I tell ya what. I bitch all the time about the fact that Phoenix has two seasons. Hot as hell and then cool in the winter. We really have no weather or 4 seasons. However, I think I'll stop bitching when I see what folks are having to deal with in Houston.

Granted, some were at the mercy of others (i.e. nursing home, elderly, etc.). Not trying to sound as if I don't empathize, I just don't understand. I would understand a few rescues, but 2000+? Doesn't make sense.

if the city is not evacuated, i guess many people have to stay. Employers do make people come in, drive through flooded areas, putting their cars and lifes at risk.... Katrina had evacuation orders, people still stayed. Houston is a huge place.

I have a friend in Beaumont that has been evacuated from his home but his work made him come in. He has to make money and can't afford to go without a week's pay. It's the terrible truth to it, evacuate and not be able to afford rent that month. Or chance it and be able to afford to survive after the storm has gone.

On a good note a standing US president has pledged $1 million of his money to the disaster relief. Pretty damn cool.

I made a donation to the Red Cross tonight via text message. Just type "Harvey" to 90999 to make a $10 dollar donation. It's easy and the least we can do for our neighbors to the South.

Regarding the "Kommen Foundation". I'd rather stand outside a breast cancer clinic handing out $20 dollar bills to exiting patients. Than hand a $1 dollar bill to the "Kommen Foundation". Knowing that 75 cents would go to the admin. That's why I really dislike the "Pink" uniform football players we get plagued with every October.

To the good folks in Texas. I'll keep you in my thoughts as the days, weeks, months and years go on during your recovery. Hang in there. Life gets better and will go on!

Admin: if I inappropriately posted the text donation site. My apologies. Please edit as you see fit. Or delete this post all together.

Help where you can guys and girls. Texas needs us all to help. If even just a little bit of money. Next time it could be you that needs help when all seems lost.

Some people refuse to see the good sometimes. Look at the glass half full for once and I apologize for original post. Don't want to turn this post political and get it locked.

On a good note, Cajun navy is still down there kicking ass. Apparently there is a Waco Navy down there also. Our town has watched as large convoys of fire and rescue mixed with civilians are coming in from Arkansas headed south. We are expected to get 25 some odd bus loads of Harvey victims within the next few days and the town is already pooling supplies. Really some amazing stuff!

Please keep off the politics on this thread.

The owner of the Rockets pledged $10MM. Wow! And that's in addition to the money he's spending as the Toyota center arena is being used for evacuee spill over from the convention center

I'm still stuck in Austin but going home tomorrow morning to asses any issues I need to take care of (probably none) before I go help others. Gasoline has shot up in Austin ($2.58 to now $2.98 for 93 octane) but I think and hope that's just a knee jerk reaction.

I see lots of people asking where to get eggs and milk. Seems like stores are selling out of everything as soon as it hits the shelf. Hopefully that's over with soon too

Guilt. Some of us have survivors guilt real bad. I have so much and have been so blessed and others have so little.

We are urging people please go out and eat at local spots, have a few drinks at the bar, get your nails done, get your hair did. These people went a whole week without work and without tips and at the end of the month rent time.

A side note. Austin can be pretty snobby sometimes. I don't get carded very much anymore but I used to use my California license in austin. They like em better than houstonians. Even just 2 months ago that was the case. Not this trip. Everybody has been gracious and kind like I have never seen in austin. It was nice, as was all of the great local music and food.

You will be getting prayers from your Texas(Edit: Tejas) neighbors to the north Erik. Glad you are safe and hope that you really have no major issues to deal with back home.

I wouldn't stress too much about the gas price hike. When I lived in Georgia last year we had the major fuel supply line bust in Alabama. The news started saying the entire east coast would be without gas for weeks or months. Everyone flipped out and bought every drop they could afford causing stations to run out because that was not their normal output. At the time I worked on a lot of fuel haulers who said they were picking up from the same location but just doing it more often to make up for the crazies. There was gas to be had but normal supply wasnt up the task, once it came up to par and people realized there was fuel the calmed down and everything went to normal. Of course it helped that the laws in place to prevent price gouging were actually enforced.

Good on ya for wanting to help out though, it's people like you that keep the faith in humanity alive. Do what ya can for others but don't forget about yourself you have been through a lot too. Be safe out there!

made it home safe. no gasoline to be had in austin or between austin and Houston really. was crazy. I'm lucky and saw a police car at a starbucks. Lots of LEO in my family - I know these guys notice things that others dont, like cars at pumps instead of just trucks filling up with diesel. I was right. He directed me to an off the main road texaco that still had 93 octane gasoline for the turbo tiguan.

it's good to be home, no damage at all, never lost power, my groceries and most importantly my ice cream was waiting for me to get home. the little things...

Houston is a mess especially downtown where millions work. I'm going to see what photohosting sites are free AND not blocked at work, hope to get pictures off of face book and saved somewhere

Some of the roads are still flooded especially those closest to the reservoirs. There are large swaths of roads and areas still under water around buffalo bayou. When you drive into some areas every house in front has a pile of trash where they are removing flooded construction material. Other areas are not harmed at all. Home that never flooded flooded this time. Other that previously flooded did not.

Aside from the great losses, the city will rebuild and be even better. The amount of money coming into the city will be tremendous. The economy will be booming even more than it was before the rain. In the next 10 to 20 years we will get flooded again and repeat the cycle.

Thank you for your thoughts. My wife and I faired well and the house didn't flood.

The flooding is really all over the place. My brother lives in a new subdivision. His neighbors flooded and the house isn't but years old. Many of them didn't have flood insurance.

If you live in an area that floods get insurance. It's cheap. Even if you don't it's good to have. Before my rates went up mine was $400 a year.

I took a particular interest in this because I have family that lives to the north in the Woodlands. They had street flooding and it got up to the back door but not sure if it got in the house. Cleanup will be a long and slow tedious process but the thing that amazes me about floods is folks have a short memory, they will rebuild in same areas. Case in point 1993 Mississippi River went nuts and and flooded in and around St. Louis and in the years since then its all rebuilt in those low areas. Glad you and some of the other sambanistas are doing ok. If I might stray off topic just a sec, gas prices here went up 30 cents a gallon everywhere........... Except Costco they refused to gouge and held price at pre flood 2.19 a gallon. They made a few loyal customers I'm sure. Very Happy

Costco and Sam's here always compete on gas prices. Sam's was 2.14. I filled up and went back the next day and Sam's didn't have any gas. I went to Costco (yesterday) and filled up for 2.04. They said they would run out in 30 minutes. Everyone else had their prices at $2.50.

From what I have been able to tell is if you make a flood claim and attempt to get a permit to fix the work the City (at least here) will allow you to do it a couple of times. After that they will not issue a permit until you get your house raised.

For those of you in Houston, do not get a permit unless you absolutely need to. For drywall and carpet you do not need a permit. Plumbing and electrical you will need it.

FEMA will come into certain areas prone to flooding and buy the area out and prevent any rebuilding. I've seen this happen in the Houston area twice.
