Do you have a hand held vacuum pump?
https://www.harborfreight.com/brake-bleeder-and-vacuum-pump-kit-63391.html
I would get one of those 1st. Pull the modulator off the trans, then hook it up to the pump and squeeze until you Get about 10" of mercury on the gauge. Then watch what the needle does. If the needle holds at 10, the modulator is fine. However, if it won't let you build, or hold a vacuum, its bad.. Also, check the movement of the adjusting screw. They do freeze up, and instead of adjusting, you are just rounding out the Allen hole. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Check you distributor vacuum can too. I replaced the distributor on my 68, dual solex carb t34, with a working unit from a 66. It started well, shifted into second just fine but would not shift into third at all. I was only able to accelerate to about 48 mph too. I borrowed a spare correct distributor from a a friend and it shifted perfectly. I spoke to a guy who rebuilt my distributor and he said that the vacuum can is unique on an automatic is super important to make sure it's working 100%. Just a thought _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Thanks guys and thanks Multi69's for that link and very useful bit of info.
I am running duel 40dcnf webers so I get my vacuum from the intake manifold.
Damn it seems like it is one thing after another with this car. |

That's normal. Or as Tram quoted, "the joy of custom things".
When you step away from stock, you can expect it to need more fine tuning to get it right. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I am also running dual DCNFs, but I get my vacuum a little different. On my carbs, there are these ports.
They are below the butterflies, so they are for manifold vacuum. I then made these little tube setups.
I have one on each carb, then they are Teed together, so I am pulling manifold vacuum from all 4 cylinders. One mistake that people make is that they think it will act like a balance tube setup. It doesn't, the carb orifices, and tubing are so small, that it doesn't act like a balance tube. For a balance tube to work, it needs to be a large diameter. However, vacuum is different, it doesn't need large diameter tubing, in fact in some cases, the smaller the better. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

It "can" work just like a balance pipe...ven using your set up....but the key is exactly what you mention.....volume. A larger "pipe" or tube is not required. You cand route the two or four equal length pipes to a small central chamber and get your volume that way.
You can tune it a "little" by using a smaller or larger chamber.....but getting too large with it slows response. Ray |

Nice, but mine do not have those ports.
Actually I am ordering 2 re built kits for them since one of them looks like it is leaking fuel where the upper portion of the carb attaches to the lower body.
Multi, are yours tuned and running good? Since I am going to rebuild mine they are not. I have tried to tune them in the past but they always seam to fall out of tune within a week or sooner.
Any suggestions as to the correct jetting or anything else I would appreciate it. |

Erikhaha,
Sorry about answering so late, getting ready for vacation. My motor runs like a champ. On the DCNFs, the first thing that you want to do, is to take the nuts, linkage arms, and washers off of the carbs and look at the throttle shaft bearings. Some DCNFs came with sealed bearings, others came with open ball bearings. If they have the open ball bearings, they need to be packed with grease as part as a maintenance schedule. Otherwise, over time they will suck more and more air through the bearings, and your jetting goes out the window (I found out the hard way). You can also replace the bearings with these.

Hands down, Pierce Manifolds are the most knowledgeable Weber people I have ever dealt with. Plus they know the DCNFs inside and out. The only thing I can tell you off the top of my head is that I am running 50 idles. However, check your bearings, and give Pierce a call. There customer service is excellent, and they will help you sort it out. I usually ask for Mike. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Multi, I ordered the bearings from Pierce and 2 re build kits. As I started re building the 2nd 40 I noticed that the little tab that the float pin is supported on was JB welded because it was broken. The tab was loose (I guess the fuel may have dissolved the JB weld around the tab over time.)
Funny thing, as I was searching a forum here in theSamba I came across a thread someone posted about the tab being broken off on their weber 40 dcnf.
So I ground off the original JB weld, roughed up the metal around it and thoroughly cleaned it, so that I could re attach the tab with another type of solvent resistant metal epoxy. It came out alright but now I am waiting for a few more parts that were worn out on that carb.
Hopefully the parts should be here tomorrow and I should have them back on the car this weekend. I'll keep you posted. |
