Picked up this 13 window from a fellow samba member who picked it up from a fellow samba member Embarassed

Don't know much about the history other than its a Texas bus. Bones are dry just has the typical rust on the body.

I think I've figured out what isn't original but I would like you guys to critique these photos and tell me what you guys see.

Basically the good the bad and the ugly. I will use this as my build thread as well.

I'd like to address some of the rust but will keep it as original as I can. Will not be painting the bus. Just some elbow grease to make it look better.

Engine number: H538857 I think this is the original 1500? Someone correct me.

The rear seats are from a bay window bus.

Excuse the delay in answering, I saw you post and thought nice Bus but glossed over your question below.

Do you mean H0538857?
Otherwise it appears you are missing a digit.
H0538857 looks like a 12/66 Beetle engine
If it's H538857X with X being another digit, that's a late 1968 Beetle engine

Other comments:
I'd probably ditch that exhaust in favor of a stock bus exhaust.

The big thing up front underneath is a heater booster someone added on - it's normally just a blower fan.

Your fan belt looks like it has some wear in that pic?

Yeah i'll replace the fan belt along with that nasty muffler. Can i use a 1500cc bus muffler? Which would work with that engine?

Thanks as always for your help.

Yes, a regular 1500/1600cc Bus muffler.
1500 and 1600 are the same.

Missing pedal pan unless you removed it. Looks like your drag link may be worn out. You'll want to check shocks, tie rods, steering damper, steering wheel play and toe in. It never hurts to grease the front end if you don't know when it's been done last and check soft brake lines. Safety stuff. If you don't know when the fuel lines were last replaced I'd replace them. I replace mine every 2 years if they are the German braided type.

You'll want to get an original style air filter if possible or at least some kind of filter. I'm can' tell for sure but it looks like you need an engine seal, very important for cooling. Plug off any extra holes in tin.

yeah the safety maintenance is top priority.
missing a battery strap as well. would make me nervous to drive it without one.

the pedal pan is missing. i will have to source one.

according to the previous owner, the master cyl, soft lines and wheel cyl have all been replaced but currently pedal goes to the floor and brakes are very weak.

i will try to bleed them out. either that or a bad master cyl. i assume its some cheapo Brazilian one on there at the moment.

Yes. Upholstery is not original, of course.

Congrats on your bus!

Besides replacing the fan belt, you need to replace that crank pulley. It looks really rusty and pitted which will continue to eat up your belt (s) in the future.
