Is the pilot bearing for the type 4 engine in the crank or flywheel? Wilson book says its the flywheel but I'm not seeing it there. I'm away from my crank for a while or I'd check that. Thanks

crank. Flywheel has a small ring that holds a felt washer to seal it.

you need a new lock plate or flip the old one over. Set the end play either before the distributor gear is in or put the distributor in. I keep a spare set of flywheel bolts that I use to set the end play with on newly built engines, and set it first without the seal. If this is just a pilot bearing swap nothing should change when you check end play.

If you had excessive endplay on a used engine then tightening it up may cause the clearances for the thrust bearing to be too tight and potentially cause it to seize to the crank. Give us more info on what you did.
