I decided to take some acetone to the only repair on the the car. There's already a dent on the rear of the door near the seam.. but luckily it only affects this door.
The rest of the car is perfectly faded in original paint.
What would you do? Where would I even find a door in Sea Sand L568?
I wouldn't want to just toss a '66 door on there and try to get it matching. |

Called ISP. They want $400 if they have it.. he's gonna call back if he does.
That Craigslist ad had 67's at the earliest.
I talked to Joel a little while ago. He has the correct door, but with a poor
coat of orange on it.
Thinking that it would come off easy enough.. but it's such a gamble.
Ya never know what's underneath. I think he said about $185 shipped. |

Very true. Lots of good info on removing resprays here:

I've read through that entire thread. I'm not so much worried about getting it off..
Maybe ill just go ahead and do it. He seems to have a lot of good parts and street cred. He was saying that he didn't see any dents inside. _________________ '66 Type 1 in Sea Sand (SOLD)

Joel is a great guy to deal with. I'd wait to see if ISP has one first, though. _________________ '67 Squareback

ISP just got back to me.. he seems to have one that would be perfect, patina and all.
I'll post pictures that he sends tomorrow.
Hopefully its a better price than quoted. I'll probably pick it up locally. _________________ '66 Type 1 in Sea Sand (SOLD)

Early '66 had 3 bolt hinges, while late '66 had 2 bolt hinges. Which do you,ISP West & Joel have? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

This is what ISP has.
Which i'm conflicted about.. On one hand, it's pretty straight..
On the other hand, it'll have the most rust/primer on the entire car.
I dig it, but i'd get a better one if I could.
I'm probably not allowed to be too choosey in this kind of situation. _________________ '66 Type 1 in Sea Sand (SOLD)

This is what Joel has.
He said that the og paint doesn't appear to be scuffed.. and with the amount of overspray on the jams, I'd say its a cheap job.
the trim and scraper are a bonus..
I'm thinking that maybe it was just a way to change the look of the car cheaply, and that the paint underneath may have even been preserved..
The curiosity is killing me..
I don't think I could ask him to strip the orange off.. but it'd sure help. _________________ '66 Type 1 in Sea Sand (SOLD)

You might find that once the orange is "stripped off", it might have more paint on it than you want. It does look like the better door though. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Fully agree with Bob on this one. The ISP door looks like it'll match your car nearly perfectly. _________________ '67 Squareback

hey just a suggestion. on your current door, knock out the dents best you can. put a good 2 or 3 layers of primer on it. then go to your local paint shop and get some color matched in a spray can and bomb the door with it. probably some flattner to take down the gloss to match your fade
once everything is good and dry, hit it hard with the buffer to get some of the primer to show through

I was really trying to keep the original door, but the rear most dent spaces out the body gap, and it's got a big ugly split in the typical spot where the door meets the fender if opened to wide.
I think the Joel's door may be a good option because I can wet sand a little bit of fading. I'd rather have too much paint than not enough. The rest of the car rarely sees metal exposure. The only other spots are the center ridge on the hood (which I adore), and on the rear hatch above the grab area. Other than that minor scratches and abrasions.
The only problem at this point is that I'm not sure if I want to go with the one mirror route.
Though if I were to this would be the most ideal route seeing as how the hole would be blanked off on the passenger side.
Has anyone drilled for a mirror mount? What do you need to put that nut on the backside?
Here's the other side for reference _________________ '66 Type 1 in Sea Sand (SOLD)
