So I'm tackling the other side of the 75. The job is much easier having done the previous side. Using a bearing press has made all the difference when installing the bearings. So much easier than tapping in...lines up perfect everytime. Also much easier taking the entire hub off to remove the stuck drum.

Nice! This is a pretty shitty job to be doing in the driveway, I know. Having the bus out of the rain or snow and up on a hoist in a clean, well-lit shop with clear workbenches, good tools, service parts at the ready and...
Wait.
What the heck am I talking about?
Keep the pics coming and tell us about the seals and grease you used. I like that you put some flat wood under your jackstand. That eliminates any imbalance caused by rough pavement, and the feet dig into the wood a little bit, too.
Looks like some pretty clean heater boxes under there. |

What rear bearings did you use? I had some quality issues on my 78 when I redid them.

Thanks guys.
Here's the parts list:
1. FEBI Bearings and seals (they say german made)...I have quite a few of the FAG bearings on my shelves from NOS but decided on these as the kit.
2. FEBI CV refresh kit with the grease from the kit.
3. Mobil 1 syn grease for the wheel bearings.
4. ATE cylinder (NOS)
5. Busdepot backing plates
6. Busdepot hardware
7. Busdepot handbrake cable
8. Busdepot OMC drums
9. Sachs shocks (Busdepot) - the coilovers were old old....
I make a valiant effort to stay away from Chinese parts...
See the http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=662598&highlight= thread for more on those Chinese parts...

That "bearing press" looks like it was made just for that job. Perfect fit. Is that an old VW shop tool, or
something that can be obtained somewhere by ordinary bus owners? _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I just searched for "bearing race and seal driver set", which was the title on a set shown on a different thread. Lots of choices pop up. _________________ -Kent-

That looks a lot easier than the way I did it using hammers and impact sockets.

Is the other side all back together yet? I was wondering if your drums rub with the new BD backing plate? I was under the impression that you needed a new spacer in the hub with the new backing plates. The new spacers are slightly longer from what I have read. Just wondering if this was an issue for you? |

With the BD backing plates the drum DID rub. I had them machined down .050 on this thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=662598&highlight=
I also replaced the spacers thinking that would solve the issue but the machining fixed everything.

The cupcake tins are awesome, they work well..
I believe it was the outer lip that had .050 removed..other people have used shims instead. _________________ Subaru |

Forgot to take a picture of the finished project.
All went together well no rubbing or clicking. Brakes bled easily too...

Are the BD backing plates known for rubbing? I went to adjust my brakes and there was a rub on each. My buddy put the BD backing plates on when he did the brakes for me a while back. |

There is only one rear backing plate being manufactured and yes they do rub most of the time.
Good luck
