79 Kombi 2.0 FI, Riviera...rear shock
The left (driver) rear shock at upper bolt was torn out after hitting loose RR track. The bolt spins freely so being 3000 miles from home I borrowed a welder and tacked the bushing and bolt in place.
Must I remove fuel tank to gain access weld new nut and bushing??

I don't know how you are going to get to it. I quess you could cut a hole in the body to weld a new nut on.
You may be better off welding the sleeve and a stud in there instead.

I did a blow up of that area on a late bay. From other threads it is different from 1972 on. Looks to me that it will involve cutting part of the area out, welding a nut and tube to a fabricated plate of some kind, welding that to the bus then welding a plate over that to complete it. Does not look like a user friendly repair. Those who have done it in other threads have all complained about it.
It is my understanding that since Sept 2001 the railroad is responsible for any damage at their tracks because since then citiy workers are not allowed to work on the area within 10' of the tracks to prevent terrorist attacks.

Just a heads up.
If shocks are installed with load carrying capacity in mind.
Reinforce the upper shock mounts. The metal is pretty thin in that area.
These pictures where the result of hitting something in the road.
But it has been reported that the shock mounts can experience cracking and tear out, with loaded air shocks and coil overs.

Cut the tower off carefully. Weld and reinforce captured nut. Weld and reinforce tower.
This is why we don't use "universal" aftermarket shocks that don't extend long enough. I'm not saying that's the reason why this one failed, but nobody with stock green shocks or Konis ever has to deal with this.
