Help please. Vanagon Westfalia 1986 automatic transmission gaz. Brand new tires, brakes, bearing wheel, and CV. There is a noise like a click, seem to be at every turn of wheel but only if I give gaz even a little. (the motor got to be on load). if I release the gaz pedal, it's ok, the click stop. I look by the differential cover and everything is OK.
I jack the both side of the rear axles, and put it on drive while pressing the brakes, but I let the wheel turn it's OK. What else should I do? |

First guess be the CVs are short of grease. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

^^^ Who did the work? How much grease was used?
Common practice these days to use at least DOUBLE the "recommended" amount of grease as supplied in most
CV joint kits. You can add more without removing the axles by using a needle adapter with any standard grease gun.
Definitely try to match the same type, if not actual brand of grease that's already in there. Good luck!

Drive it slowly in a circle in a parking lot. If the clicking occurs in one direction but not in the other then you likely have a dry or bad CV. Cheap CV's can go bad right out of the box..... |

Mine always just did an obvious "Click-click-click" under load, mostly up big hills.
Still a good test you got there, Thanks. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Unfortunately there are some inferior CV joints being sold. The 'complete' axle sets are notorious for poor quality. Packing extra grease can help but they likely will not last as long as the original CV's. Lobro CV's are still supposed to be high quality but only available as individual units. So.... if your mechanic installed one of those complete axle sets you should not expect a long life from the CV's. YMMV. _________________ Dave O

Thanks agents, appreciated.
We had one clicking up a symphony, so went ahead and had all four done about 30K ago. One clicked a little 10K ago so more grease went in but all's been spotless.
Yes on Lobros.
Yes on having a spare.
Thanks. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

If I could jump in on this thread, I just bought an 86’ and drove it about 100 miles then on the way home from Farm Aid a clanging sound started in the rear drivers side wheel area. The next day I popped the hubcap off and 3 lug nuts were loose. I thought this might be the case since the previous owner said he just rotated the tires. I then drove it another 100 miles then on my way camping this weekend the noise came back but the lug nuts are not loose. Any suggestions? |
