There is a relay under the driver's seat that cuts power to the fridge when the alternator isn't charging, ie the engine is off. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Does the factory AC suppose to work on 120v shore power when plugged up? _________________ Brandon

If you mean the double, 110V plug left of fridge, Yes. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

No. That would require a separate 120v compressor circuit, which would be pretty trick if it could be accomplished. _________________ Casey--

Answer, there's more storage under the back seat of a "Weekender" unit than a full camper.
But admittedly, less cabinet storage overall.
But, you also get a bigger bed!

Jumper cables, air compressor, tent?, auxiliary battery, inverter? Behind the battery? And did you remove your rear heater? Any regrets about that? |

The US hasn't used a 110v main standard since the 1930's. I believe it officially accepted 120v as standard in the mid-'80's. I'm sure some electrical nerd can correct my off the cuff account of the whens and whys. _________________ Casey--

I still don't understand your reply to the question.
When plugging into shore power, the exterior plugs left of fridge run anything I'd plug in at home. No complications. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

I assumed his reference to "AC" was air conditioning, which is entirely run off the engine with the factory system. _________________ Casey--

Ahhhh, now I get ya, Thanks. I thought he meant "AC power," and still do.
Maybe we're both wrong and it's an Alice Cooper reference. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Provided an OP hasn't done some re-wiring.

Removed mine out of my full-camper... zero regrets.

A/C = air conditioning
AC = alternating current, one half of a rock band, or air-cooled
This is why it's important to use the correct abbreviations, which have faltered in use since newspapers have gone the way of dinosaurs. _________________ ~Kamz

coming from someone who lives in the sonoran desert, i can see it.
but for anyone who experiences any kind of real winter, i would recommend keeping it. the rear heater really makes it happen--and quickly--in the cold _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Ok yes I mean air conditioning unit working off AC shore power. Sorry for not being clear. This is the lazy person thread...
My factory air conditioning does not work so I didn't know... Thanks for the answers! _________________ Brandon

Having been out over 49 months and never using our rear heater, we've been thinking of taking it out to:
-- make room!
-- save weight!
-- eliminate another point of a potential leak, or electrical problem, or other failure in our system
-- but keep all parts to retro-fit should we, or a buyer, ever want them (a standard we try to use on everything)
But, we're also south in the winter. If not there's no way I'd remove it (raised in Wisconsin and needn't any [additional] flashbacks!). _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Yes, the rear heater can easily be removed by replacing the tee connectors with straight connectors. Unfasten the screws holding the housing down and remove as a unit. I'm strongly considering doing this on my van, since I've rarely needed the rear setup here in the PNW. I may regret this since I have a TDI swap and they tend to run pretty cool, so my front heater may not be the monster heat supplier it was with the WBX. _________________ Casey--

Lots of previous discussion on the rear heater delete but, what the hey, I'll put in my .02.
My reasons for keeping:
- Dry/warm up boots and clothing before/after winter sports.
- Sometimes the front heater is too much.
- I have a leaky front heater valve. Until it's replaced I have a hard shut-off. In the in-between days of spring and autumn it's nice to have heat at hand if I've shut off the front heat.
- Keepin' it stock, yo! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Does the front heater fan only blow hot air out towards your feet? I hope so or else I messed up something when I reconditioned my turkey heater box. _________________ Brandon

It should blow hot air out of every orifice.
