Hi,
New lazy person’s question. I got my 87 Syncro with a very dirty and dull Poptop last year. After using Maguire’s 3 step process it looks way better. There are spots were the finish (paint?) has flaked off and grey is showing through under the white. Does this mean it was gray originally or is the gell coat coming off?
In any event I’d like to touch up the white as 95% of it is shiny and appears fine. Any advice on product and possibly “correct” color?
Thank you!

Nice van. I believe that others will chime in on the top but it does look like a refinish is needed. This topic prompts lively conversation due to different approaches. Here are a few threads:

I realize there has been a lot written about this topic, I’ve now looked at a lot of it. I realize the marine epoxy paint is probably the way to go. Mine really just needs a touch up in spots right now. The rest still shines quite well. Looking for any advice of doing just spots that need attention for now.

Thanks for your comment on Lola, we think she’s pretty sweet. The rack is called a 1up. It’s a bike rack but could probably handle a small dirt bike. It’s on a custom extension my son made that keeps it from interfering with the spare tire rack and allows the hatch to still open. Rack is American made of aircraft aluminum and far and away the best bike rack I’ve seen. Can add space for two more bikes as well.

Did you buy this bus from a great surfer couple from near LA???

If so, they're awesome and I'd bet they were great sellers, too!

Neato! That looks like a great tray solution that keeps both wheels on the bike and can also be mounted vertically on a Gary Lee or RMW swing-away.

When you're using a multi tester and you touch the ground end to a part of the body that is painted (like an interior body panel), is that paint enough to insulate and affect the reading?

Do you absolutely have to find a spot of bare metal to ground?

I have a mix of ceramic and glass fuses. Is that ok? or should they be all ceramic (or all glass)?

Would post a photo but they won't upload for some reason.

Doing a full suspension rebuild - except upper control arms. Going to hold out til Burley new UCAs come out.

Is it okay for me to remove the UCA? I need to paint the tower. I'll mark the washer.

Also, is there a reason why I have real bad rust on my driver side front jacking point? Ill take pictures but I'm scared it's too far gone.

Hmm, you’ve got an ‘84, that fusebox was designed for ceramic fuses. You can squeeze a glass fuse in there but it’s not ideal.

Here’s what GW sells as a replacement fuse kit:

Hope that’s what you were asking about.

What is the best 14" vanagon tire available now for a stock 2wd? My van came with new Thunderer Ranger R101 (185R14C 8 PR light truck) tires. I have a sweet set of 14" powder coated wheels to swap to. Wondering if I should transfer the tires over to the new wheels or if there would be a significant benefit to going with a different tire.

Thanks!

Why not keep the ones you have? I have been using the Nexen Roadians that are rated for these rigs and they seem fine: they were about $300, installed, if memory serves.

Tires age, even if they aren't being used: you don't say how old the ones you have are but why not use them up?
