I recently had a flex plate shatter mostly lock up the engine/transmission. We removed the engine, installed new flex plate and set crankshaft end play, inspected torque convertor and reassembled- new and major atf leak exiting at the rear bottom of bellhousing. We removed the engine and torque convertor again. We replaced the torque convertor seal and bushing. We pressure tested the torque convertor mostly underwater and soaked the remaining portion with soapy water and found no leak. We visually inspected the shaft on the transmission and could see no sign of anything bent. There were very light marks on the top of the bellhousing where something must have scratched it but they are way to light to be leaking. After reinstalling the engine, nothing has changed. There is a steady stream of atf being flung from the torque convertor onto everything in it's circle. Rear of engine is very dry, back of torque convertor is soaked in atf. We can see the vents? at top of transmission and they both appear dry. Anybody have a similar experience? Ideas?

All I can think of is a hard-to-see hairline fracture that takes full oil pump pressure (more than your test pressure) to weep.

last time I checked where a torque convertor slides into the trans there is a seal inside the transmission where the torque convertor rides. Did you replace that?

Great pic- thank you, that is the seal we replaced. My dad was a master vw technician for more than 30 years (it's been awhile since he has worked in one of these though) and that was what he thought it should be called. I thought "front pump seal" might be more appropriate. Bushing was right inside the torque converter- no seal visible in the torque convertor. I should mention we pressure tested the torque converter up to 60 psi- anybody know how much this actually carries?
