Looks like the front is super low. Plenty of extra parts. New gas tank.

Dash and C-pillars indicate it's a '71, not '70.

And the VIN tag... Wink

You probably know this already, but don't throw away any parts yet. And read the Type 3 FAQ at the top of the forum threads. That'll answer a lot of questions.

No engine. I will be in the market for a type 3 engine. Everything else was included.

Try to get as complete an engine as you can. You've got some parts, like an outer fan housing and a dipstick, but you'll need to assemble the rest. That generator isn't Type 3, it's Bug/Bus. You've got the torque converter for your transmission, so that's good, but you'll need a flexplate for your engine.

Check the classifieds here for parts. Samba members Boo-Koo-Z (Joel) and Ataraxia (Josh) are good guys I've dealt with who will give you a fair deal on parts, and there are lots of other good vendors as well.

Buy another cheap 70-73 FI/AT square or fasty for the missing/extra parts you need. Idea

Trying to re engineer all of the hacks in a car I have never seen before is proving difficult Smile The steering coupler has been disassembled and the steering wheel seems to have no column or support holding it up. The upper shock mounts in the front seem to be cut off and all 4 shocks and hardware are missing. It appears someone has removed every single frame bolt....
Left the front end uneven and the rear end half taken apart. Brakes are in shambles and ripped out. Wiring is a big nest and wires hanging everywhere. This is going to be fun. Im thinking I should start with the frame mounting bolts. Can I buy a bag of these somewhere? Does someone here have enough of them to sell?

Interesting project...there are some parts that cross platforms (Type 1 parts that are used on the Type 3, etc.) but most are Type 3 specific parts.

What are you referring to when you say 'frame mounting bolts'?

You may want to download the online parts book to help you identify part that you have (or that you need):
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type3_parts_book/

and the wiring diagram for your year:

Thank you for the reading!! And I am referring to the various bolts underneath the car in the corners where the body sits on the frame. For example. I can lift the body off the chassis.

The Type 3 doesn't have a frame like a bus, it only has the body and the pan. As you have discovered, those bolts hold the body to the pan.

You are missing almost the entire steering column. The 71 cars used a one year only column, but you could replace it with a different year, although it may take some work.

Your whole front beam will likely have to be replaced if the shock mounts are cut off.

Somebody took a huge dump all over this poor car. Kudos to you for trying to save it -- it's going to be a long road.

As Mike said, you may be better off buying a parts car to get what you need.

Might have the flex plate and some engine parts that will work. Maybe if I cut up a bus column and use this little bracket that was inside the fastback? Looks like it could work. Shock arm can probably be saved too but will need some work

I'm full of bad news...

That's a Type 4 motor and I don't believe the flex plates interchange with Type 3 plates; the flywheel mounting is different.

Make sure you get a late (IRS-compatible) Type 3 engine with the "moustache bar" engine support.

You must use the '71 Type 3 steering column parts to maintain the safety of the collapsible design. Fortunately, although there are some one-year only parts, they are easily available in the Samba classifies regularly.

Phil is right, that's a Type 4/Bay Bus flexplate, which won't work with a Type 3 engine.

The Type 411-412 engine used the same 003 automatic transmission with a little lower gear ratio & will bolt into your fasty. multi69s has a Type 4/AT in his square. They are 1.7,1.8 & 2.0 liters stock. Came in the 914 Porsche too.

Slow down, Mike...a Type 4 motor can be custom fitted, but it's not, as you say, a "bolt in" job.
