That's the part number for the case, not the engine number. That will be on the top of the case, at the seam between the case halves.

A 5 pin TVS indicates a 72-73 system.

I'm looking for the engine number at the top of the case at the seam (far right photo)

Looks like a '72 FI motor number.
Parts on that motor are fine, but you will need to find an ECU and a MPS per the table above for '72:
ECU: 311 906 021 E
MPS: 311 906 051 E (make sure it holds vacuum, and hopefully has not had the plastic cover removed)

That white plug is something that's been hacked in by a PO. The tan plug is for the fuel pump:

That plug you're holding connects to the turn signal switch, which is 1971 only. The black fuse holder lives behind the fusebox, and is for the fresh air fan, which is the switch to the left of the steering wheel. The hole next to it is for your headlight switch. Was in included when you bought the car?

That's your fuel pump relay.

It should be mounted by a screw to the front bulkhead behind the dash. Here's mine:

Yeah, lots of work, but nothing insurmountable.
What's your priority list? Rather than pick at things from photos, if you have a "punch list" we can advise you for shortcuts and sources, that will speed things up for you.

Its really just going to move along as the money comes in for it.
Need to make a few larger purchases.
Exhaust
Fuel injection computer/fuel rails/Misc
gaskets/ rebuild
front seats
carpet kit/make my own
Shocks

Sorting all the wiring out shouldn't cost much except my time.
The brakes just need to be hooked up mostly, new rubber lines were included.
Missing a plastic elbow that goes into the top of the brake master cylinder.
Still need to find and insert all of the pan bolts.
Rear bumper bracket needs to be welded/fabricated onto the car.

Wiring will drive you nuts, between the Medusa's head under the left dash, and the hacks by prior owners. Common suggestion is to download the Samba's color wiring diagram to a thumb drive, have kinko's print it poster size and laminate it. Makes it easier to mark off issues & fixes as you go with a dry erase marker.

Check the Samba classifieds for FI parts, they come up a lot.

Cleaned the heads. Super dirty in there. Engine turns freely now. Was just hitting a pile of dirt in the cylinder. Anyone have a link for the two temp sensors in the head?

Bus Depot sells new ones, but you only need one. Somebody added one ar some point -- never seen that before... But check your old ones first! Use an ohmmeter to check the resistance.

Donnie, that looks like a "universal" VW-Audi head, that's drilled for either early (68-69 with temp sensor under the exhaust port), or late 70-73 type 3 and bug 75-79. If you look at the casting numbers and symbols, you'll see the VW-Audi logos. Wink

I bet you're exactly right Bob -- though I'm wondering why they installed two sensors Shocked

The lower one was hooked up and the top one looks like the wire is almost broken. I bet they just installed a second one instead of removing the first.
Got the oil pump pulled with a little puller I welded up. Probably going to have to make a case splitter as well. Is there a decided brand/website for the best rebuild kit? Looking for very basic rebuild. Already have the heads obviously and I hope to not have to replace the crank or the cam. But I guess the numbers will tell me once I split the case.

The clearance on the crank is .30mm for all four. Seems good per the book. The cam looks like it ate something and spit it out but everything else seems perfect. So new cam for sure.

Scored two pretty complete type 3 engines from a buddy. Have been sitting outside for a long time so they are locked up. But the tins and parts are good to be salvaged. Both engine codes start with a T. So the chart says 66-67. They both have dual carbs but Ill just part out what I cant use. Also ordered a computer and air intake bellow from the classifieds.
