I have about 200 miles on my subi conversion (stock ej25 / westfalia) when I came to a right light, pushed the clutch in to downshift and this happened......
Wondering if this is an oddity or if its fairly common? |

Not common.
Has that clutch ever “chattered”? (Shuddered?)
Did it give any prior hint that something was wrong? (in that 200 miles)
I think to fail like that it must’ve had 10, 20 cracks growing (from clutch chatter), and they all finally grew too big, and let go at once.
Was it a 'new disc, never used"? _________________

I discovered this cracking SACH clutch disc by accident... not chattering at all.
It had about 50k miles on it with the TDI engine.

The original posters disc has the appearance of a reman on my phone. I’m seeing media blasted rust pitting. But like Andy’s pics, it appears in this case the straps failed first. I wonder if the rebuilder oriented the straps backwards. No reason to fail so soon. _________________ ☮️ |

WOW!
Yes, what flywheel and clutch do you have?
I have a stock Subaru flywheel, VW disc, and a stock Subaru 2.5 clutch.
Using a Small Car bellhousing
Aside from the initial blown VW hydraulic throw out bearing due to Small Car's crappy idea for the pedal, I have had zero problems in many years. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!
