I've started collecting parts for a 2332 build. I have a shop now and winter will soon be here in Oregon. Found a standard/standard as41 universal case for less than $200 Very Happy .....I have cb unitech 5.5 rods and a brand new 86b with matched lifters. Will probably find another set of Dell 45's for it but may hunt for some 48's. Not sure bout the heads yet but will probably go with the new super pros with 45mm valve. The goal with this motor is basically to keep learning and try new tricks with the build. Suggestions welcome.

If you want to try something, try bigger rods.

Stock vw rods are stronger than Porsche rods.

5.5 will work better with a cam that keeps the torque and hp lower in the rpms. Thinking of the 86b or an FK43.

I may. Got a brand new 86b and matching lifters. Got an Engle 120 also. And I have another XR310...that one on a 108 lobe. I think the 120 with 1.3's would just have silly torque. The 86b in a 2332 would be a nice all around animal. Really want to try an FK43 too.

Oh. Now that's what I'm talking about. 2387! What else do you need to do to fit an 86 crank? And this is going in a as41 universal case...never line bored and doesn't need it.
Shuffle pin the case? Wedge mate crank and flywheel? Or is an 8 dowel crank good enough? At what hp do you need to wedge mate the crank and flywheel?

The design of the rod did. Porsche rods are their weak link. Thin at the wrist pin

If a Porsche rod is going to break the wrist pin area is the least likely. More likely would be rod bolts. Dan

Never if it's always a rolling start Smile

May also consider drilling crank for 3/8 dowels, however.

My 86 crank with carillo rods basically dropped in. On a non clearanced cam it turns over but touches. So a pre clearanced cam would be a drop in. I have a 411 center main on mine.

My 86 and 3/8 bolt h beam Chevy journal took some cam clearance.
But not as much as some.

I have been told that for an 86 or larger, the cam needs to be ground on a smaller base circle. If the base circle is too big, the nose of a few lobes will want to hit the crank, and I don't think theres a way to clearance that (besides going to a case with lowered cam mounting)
