Told Jose I wanted something special, I said do it like this. He did it. Did not quite want a full circle which adds weight to the rod journal side, wanted tall gussets in the stressed area (where cranks break).
You want the extra weight opposite of the rod journal (counter weight) and the rod journal area a light as possible, thus the big holes drilled. I only wish he would of made the counter weights thicker for even more strength.
Sometimes I wish I went with a 82mm. The longer the stroke the weaker they get. I went for the 2.165" rods for more main/rod overlap. Porsche is 2.086" 53mm.
2.0" chevy journals are a stupid idea.

So....took the beast out for a drive this past week and saw a bug sitting in the side part of a yard I drove by. Turned out to be a 69 and no rust....never wrecked. Motor was in pieces inside the car. Talked to the guy and he wanted $1,500 for it. He let me take a look at it and lo and behold the carbs are Dells....and 48's! Picking the car up tomorrow. Looking forward to splitting the case to see what's in it! Those Dell 48's are going to come in handy for my 2332 build! _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Found the cam I'll be using thanks to Shag....Steve Long exr304...it's right in between a 86b and 86c. Perfect. Lovimg rhis xr310 in my 2276. Getting the SLR exr304 on 106 lobes. It should make power from 2800 to around 6700. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

All things being equal....heads...carbs....compression(10:1)...what would the difference be between am 86b and 86c in a 2332? _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Assuming the only change is the cam I'd expect maybe 5bhp more peak and to keep revving a couple hundred rpm more.
Will be interesting to hear from anyone who has tried it. Or maybe fk8 to fk10
I used to know a guy who swapped from 86b to 86c and loved it, iirc he had 46x37 titanium valves in a 2332 on IDAs though so pretty nuts regardless. |
I've got 44x37 with 48 Dell's. 5hp? Not worth buying another cam as I've already got the 86b. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

But not as much as some.

I have been told that for an 86 or larger, the cam needs to be ground on a smaller base circle. If the base circle is too big, the nose of a few lobes will want to hit the crank, and I don't think theres a way to clearance that (besides going to a case with lowered cam mounting) |
I had a cam hit the crank on my 84 stroke..Ijust changed cams. my hyd roller has a large base circle...I think Ive checked that and no issues...as I recall. IMHO large base circle & smaller lift is the way to go. or the lowered cam cases...witch is what I want but dont have. |

Yeah, I'd like to hear what he has to say with the 86b vs the 86c.......will probably go with the 86b anyway...sgould make for a ton of torque from idle up in a 2332 and the super pro heads. Or I may put the 86c in the 2332 and put the 86b in the 2276 while it's out. Lol.....I hate picking a cam.
Just ordered 4340 84mm crank...5.5 h beams...lightened flywheel...Kennedy stage 1 PP. Having it all balanced together also. Have a set of Thorsten tool steel lifters to use with this build. All I have left to order is another deep sump, cam, crank, rod bearings, and the trick deep sump oil pickup that CB sells. No clamps....no brazing. I should have it together before winter is over. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Perfect timing. I'm collecting parts for a very similar build. I think I'll wait to start assembly so I can follow along as you go. Please keep the updates coming _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia |

I'm thinking with my super pros and the 86b with 1.4's and a good 1 5/8 header I'll get a very easy 170 and lots of torque from idle up. It'll be a driver....there isn't any other than that in my mind. My 2276 with xr310 does just fine on the the occasional commute to work and back....54 miles one way. 4th gear is a lot of fun on the interstate....cruise along at 65-70....blip the gas pedal and I'm doing 95 without trying. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.

Head temps have been great from the start. CHT sender under #3 And temps cruising arouind town in the 300 to 310 range...highway runs 315 to 325 range. I had an issue with oil temps but I did build the 2276 on the tighter side of tolerances....and it still isn't really broken in yet....maybe has 500 miles on it. I added an external oil cooler with thermal switched fan and oil temps haven't topped 195 since. Also added a 30mm oil pump which I think I should have done in the original build. Key to high compression is a tight deck...it runs nice and cool. _________________ Good things come to those who wait.
