Has anyone seen a 411 or 412 square back modified to a pickup? I have a '70 411 2 door square back sitting here that I saved from the scrap yard. It does run and has minimal rust but I have too many projects and put it up for sale. No interest what so ever.
So - if and when I get to it I am kicking around the idea of moving the rear window area up just behind the doors and making a pickup that would look like it could have come from VW. No other changes right down to original wheels.
Thoughts? |

Interesting.....but will take some difficult welding and strengthening.
These cars have no pan, are unibody and have a front and rear crash cells/crumple zones. Cut in the wrong place and you can have collapse issues. Ray |

Looks sort of like the VW version of the Subaru Brat! |

Thanks for the replies!
Yes Ray I am quite aware of the need to maintain the structural integrity of the unibody. The car would have to be properly supported while it is being cut apart and attention would need to be given to adding enough material to replace the loss of the roof. I spent a number of years as a licenced body repairman doing heavy collision and frame repair mostly on unibody cars so the chore would not be too daunting.
Thanks for the links Lars!
Yes the blue on has more than a passing resemblance to the Brat. To me though the cab and box proportions are wrong. I would eliminate the rear side window area and move the back of the cab forward to make the box longer. I like the yellow one better for that reason.
Just my personal taste though as both appear to be very well done! |
