Folks,
Need help please! When we were moving the car around a few weeks ago the ignition was left on in the 71 ghia. It fried the points wire and condenser which I have all replaced (with electronic ignition). Problem is that still anything that is switched via the ignition switch does not have power. For example the wipers wont work, headlights wont come on, engine wont turn over, etc. Other items such as the hazards, running lights, dash lights all work fine. I have checked all the fuses in the fuse block and all are good (ohmed them out). At the fuse panel for 1-8 there is no juice 9-10 have juice. It is almost like there is a fuse somewhere in the ignition system that is blown. Is there such a thing? Did I fry the ignition switch itself? Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

Go back over the instructions and wiring diagram, make sure you made the correct connections. Did you also change your coil ? _________________ ----------------------

Thanks for the info. Everything is wired correctly (triple checked both instructions, manual, and pictures from before) and there is no power to the plus side of the coil when the ignition is on. I did not change the coil but have a spare and can. I did not change it because there was no power on the positive terminal when the key was in the start position. |

This should be very straightforward to troubleshoot.
Going into your ignition switch you have a fat red wire, this is 12v from the battery. Coming out of your ignition switch you have a black wire, this is terminal 15. It goes from the ignition switch to the fuse box where it powers all the things that are powered when you turn the switch on.
If nothing that is supposed to be powered with key on works, then you should suspect either this wire is disconnected or your ignition switch is dead.
Find the two wires mentioned above going to the ignition switch and perform the following test with your voltmeter:
1) Find the red wire going in - does it have 12v on it? If yes, proceed. If no, fix that.
2) Turn ignition switch on.
3) Find the black wire coming out and going to fuse box. Does it have 12v on it? I think the answer will be no and you will be replacing ignition switch, but test don't guess.
There are no fuses in the ignition system, at least as VW wired it. Who knows what some hack PO may have done in the past. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S
