Just looking for information on roof racks for tin tops only! What would be the shortest towers that you could actually use. Primarily looking for roof racks over the cab for a basket not the rear or the middle of the van?

Thule 300s will clear the sections of the roof without 'strengthening ribs'. On my '82 there was 1/2" of clearance between the roof and the bar.

It depends on how the basket mounts. I couldn't make a Yakima megawarrior work, there's just not room for the brackets underneath. It might have worked with U-shackles and custom mounts.

The 300s would probably work with a lot of accessories, like bike mounts, lights or solar.

I had to go with Thule 387s to mount the megawarrior.

I don't know much about Yakima, but they sell a spacer, so if the short ones don't work, you're not stuck buying another set of mounts.

If you're patient, depending on where you live the rack stuff pops up on CL really frequently and for a lot less than new.

I use Thule 8" foot pack.. I have 1.5" clearance from the roof to the bars. The clearance depends on the angle of the foot pack you set. I have them at 7".

I had Yakima 1A towers with the hi-rise spacers. The spacers lifted it too much, I trimmed them to be so low profile that the bars would touch the raised sections(ribs) of the roof, but worked fine on the rest.

The highest part of the roof is just about 6" (150mm) above the inside of the rain gutter. So if you want to clear the middle of the roof, you will need to raise the bottom of your roof rack more than 6" above the rain gutter trough. As you move towards the front or back of the roof, less clearance is necessary.

Yakima 1A with Megawarrior fits with NO risers.

I have a Megawarrior sitting right over the front, sounds like that's what you are looking for. Access is excellent because you can open a door and stand on the carpet next to the front seats and reach everything, or step up there using the kink in the B pillar as a tiny step.

ONE NEUANCE. The rear clamps on the Megawarrior were a little to close to the roof so I spread the rears out only a few inches and all is good.

Here's a side shot that I recently uploaded, let me know if you want additional photos. BONUS An awning mounted to the racks sits very nicely in line with the basket.

Thanks for the pic! I was able to get a set of 1A's and 58" bars locally for $100.

Look, its just you and Rooney. You don't need the basket for gear. Laughing

Unless you are bringing firewood to the Transporterfest campout....

I use both the Thule cargo box and the Yakima megawarrior basket at the same time on my tin top, the four inch spacers were way to high so I machined these 1.25" spacers. I also use three Yakima bars, the front bar being just to help support my awning.

Go Westy sells spacers for the Yakima 1A towers that are 1/2 the size of the ones Yakima sells. That is what I have on my tin top. It's the perfect height.http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?id=24336
