That's amazing how an entire town can be erased in such a short time. If you couldn't reference the chruch on the hill, there is no way you could tell it was the same place. There was a topic about Centralia in the off topic threads. I watched the entire linked video. Very interesting. |

Today’s misadventures took me down below Clinton NC. My wife’s brother needed a ride to the family homestead because his electric car wouldn’t make the trip. This required us to take two cars... Darn!
I had way more fun taking the back roads.
I found this abandoned old farmhouse that is remarkably still intact.

Then there was this abandoned old school south of Benson on 242.

Then there was this post apocalyptic, zombie hideout looking shell of a school near Harrells NC.

What happened to that truck? Get hit buy a missile?
You sure have your share of abandoned buildings down there. More then Centralia!
Why didn't you climb the water tower and take a pic? |

Most of these abandoned buildings are along rural highways that were once main arteries to & from the fields to the cities that have been bypassed by the interstates & forgotten.
Like this general store/residence...
You can even see the plumbing where the pumps once stood.
Oddly, the back roads are a shorter distance, & if the scenery hadn’t distracted me so many times, I would have gotten there in the same amount of time. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

This used to be the Post Office & train station in what was once the township of Tomahawk N.C..

Fascinating stuff fellows!
There are 5 abandoned towns within 20 minutes of our house. I have driven past the general store at one of them daily for the last 15 years. Then a year ago on my way home there was a large tractor there with a blade on it and just a smoking pile of old timbers!
Always wanted to get pictures but never took the time... |

Hopefully this thread will inspire you to get out there, explore, & start taking your own pictures. And possibly share with the rest of us. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

This one looks like it can be lived in still. Just reclaim the front yard.. Real estate is so expensive where I live- it amazes me to see so many properties just abandoned. |

It is completely move in ready. I took lots of pics of the gorgeous interior but I didn't want to push the lack of VW content thing. I talked to my mother in law about it & it's wrapped up in all sorts of lawsuits, liens, & family arbitration due to medical, renovation, & outstanding mortgages & taxes.
It truly is the gem of all of the abandoned properties that I've explored so far.

I've looked into "squatter's rights" & there's not much chance if a bank is involved in NC. But you could live there until the bank comes around. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Wow it does look good. Hopefully it doesn't fall into total disrepair and suffer at the hand of vandals before all the legal mess gets worked out. I like the style and history of the old homes. It's a shame to see them die. |

Are there no rocks or young boys around there?, why are all the windows intact? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

What's left of the Ingold Community center.
And another abandoned general store, also in Ingold N.C.

It's winter now but I'll try and get some stuff for you later on.
For now, an old, no-longer-used, barn.
