According to Wikipedia, first in '81 then in '92.

I'd ask that question in the water cooled forums- because if I recall, '82 was the first model year change.

Then wiki is wrong (for the US market anyway.).
As I recall, The first Shitrocket was 74/5, there was a minor change in side markers & tail lights in 1978. The body changed in 1982 & that body got fender flares, air dam & spoiler in 1986/7 with the 16v& continued until 1988 (in the US market) when it was discontinued (there again in the US market).

Well....not quite wrong.....just not paying attention to markets. I was stunned to find out a while back that a VW car called sirroco was marketed anywhere after 1989.
The mk1 was a fun car. Underpowered.....yes. Had it gotten the same treatment as the original GTI....it would have spanked it. It had better balance and lower center of gravity.
The 16 valves were nice cars.....but the smog equipment was killing it....and it was complex under the hood. Had the Corrado engine gone into it.....it would have kicked well.
The 2008 version....Europe....was nothing but a sleeked out Golf mk5 with a lower roof line and slimmer tail. In fact a fair portion of the nose and front fender styling went into my Golf mk6.
I think they should have translated the lower roof line (they did a slight bit) into the Golf mk6 and called it what it is.....a Golf. Ray |

Not ever sold in the USA, but Scirocco GTI's, in both generations, were built:

I had a 82 .. i think it was.. had the full wrap kit I got from junkyard for like 25 bucks.. was a fun car to drive for a fwd.. went to the keys in this car.. had a great weekend by myself.. got to watch offshore powerboat race.. camped out ...

On the other hand, European market Shitrockets were also available in 1.1l, 1.2l, 1.3l, & 1.4l versions making our 1.6l & 1.7l seem quite peppy (although, the European engines had higher CRs & would actually make close to the same HP.

1983 GTIs had a 1.8L, 90hp (100 ft. lbs. of torque) fuel-injected engine.
Brochures show the GTI being 1 second quicker (8.2 vs. 7.2 in a 0-50 test).

Thanks. They were both "old" used cars and the '83 was a theft recovery so maybe the GTI had been re-assembled with whatever.
My '87 16v GTI was definitely wayyyy faster.
I remember that being 123hp.

I drove a couple of them back in the mid '70s. The drive train/engine were identical to my '76 Rabbit so performance was identical too.
I did use the single throat solex intake manifold of a '75 Scirocco on my Rabbit later though when I turo-ed the Rabbit... The Solex carb was virtually identical to the one on my '71 SB. |

| the mkII rocco's did get the better 90hp 8 valve motor, but it was too late as the car had bloated by then. The 16V car was good, but the 16V motor was even better when swapped into a mkI, we did that on an 80' rocco on regular CIS and it actually made 123hp at the wheels. Was a very quick auto-x'r. |

My favorite body style, sleek and compact. And not bloated like the 2nd gen body was.
And it fit, just. The throttle pull needed at tad more room from the under-hood framing.
And this would've been a killer motor and as loud as any Vette comiing or going.
