I have replaced so many rad this summer that I had it with my manual pumping... So for Vanagon this is the fastest way to fill an empty rad:
-Close front rad bleed screw
-Fill rear EX tank, inject air (SLOWLY) until the EX thank is half full, close air valve, go in front and open rad bleed screw until air pressure is out. Close back rad bleed screw and start again about 3 time. Rad will overflow.... your done.
Voila, Ben

Thanks Ben. Just installed a new rad last week, but haven't refilled the system yet. I'll have to try this! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

That fills and bleeds the supply line to the radiator, but you still could have air in the return line, particularly given you have just introduced a whole bunch more air into the system. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

Is that's what the starting three times should address, pushing all the air out the bleed valve? That was how I read it. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

i use a 12v water pump pushing in coolant thru the rad cap nipple. works great to force the air out while still adding coolant.

I just turn the van upside down and fill into the drain plug.

This is for a Subi conversion but I did it on a stock engine.
Why 3 time, to not empty the EX tank and put air back in the system.
Also I should state that this was an "empty coolant wise" van.
