I love recovery threads so doing one for my new pile.
So I was told at this years local car show that there was a bus just like mine in the wood about 5 km from me. I would be sceptical of these things except he made a point of saying it had a post in the middle of the windshield. I was also told the old guy that owned it does not sell anything. He was at least a 100 years old thirty years ago when I saw him last...
So yesterday afternoon I took a trip down to the local hermits sprawling collection of old things. Found him propping up a roof on one of his sheds. He didn't try to shoot me and actually pointed me in the direction of the bus
I was so exited to see this pile of rust.

So went in tonight to clean it up and see what the plan of attack is. Was hoping we could get it out in one piece.. Just for the fun of it.
Frames are completely rotted off at bulkhead and it has settled into the ground quite a bit. Just going to be to much trouble and I was just going to chop it up at home anyway.
Looks like the front beam may still be good. Clutch pedal still worked. steering box feels nice and tight. Found over $100 in little things I was going to need to buy for my bus.
Cleaned it out and made a plan for tomorrow.

At least changing the shift coupler will be easier than usual... |

You should do well with the parts. I see lots of good parts still left of this bus. If the front seat is not rusted away it is worth $600 or so. The tail lights look good. It is too far gone to save, but certainly a great parts bus. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

The seat is rotted out and the tale light is cracked
I will save about $200 in parts for my bus though. Just little stuff that adds up. It has all the front interior panels that I can use as patterns for when I make mine. With a few differences. I may be able to clean them up and make them good for a daily driver. Front bumper is usable also. Was surprised there was anything left below the dirt.
I want a panel daily driver some day so think I will keep the steel unless someone needs something. I am really curious about the motor, trans and reductions. From what I could see they look good corrosion wise. Front beam may be good also...
Will find out tonight. _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration

100% humidity and the proper temperature for having a beer... Not cutting up busses
Front section of roof was in usable shape so cut it across behind doors. Drivers door header was no good so seemed like a good spot to cut. Quite rusted at the corners of the windshield so will likely cut it at those spots. Didn't want to cut any more than needed until I was sure.
Left side and roof edge is usable so left it attached to the wall.
Got the front beam "loaded"... It was a slow ride home Beam actually looks good. Wont know for sure until I unbolt it from the frame. Wheels steer...
Only get 1 hour of work before dark now. Got it home and under cover. Giving rain for the next couple days. Will go back for the rest when weather permits.

Nice job, way to get after it. I had no idea you could tow anything with a Toyota Yaris. _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |
