this is always a time eater. but, it has to be done, and done right. I would say I am about 1/2 way done with the wiring....give or take.

I found this and almost shit

how this bus didn't burn to the ground is a miracle Shocked that is the main, un-fused feed to the fuse box.

the red/black stripe wire looks to have been pinched too. Was the damage from a pinch or rub?

It is. Thankfully I'm a hoarder, and have the correct wire to repair both

Skills - I'm not paying for replacement wires. As my new agent Abscate has kindly pointed out, they were not contained in the original quote - an unacceptable oversight! And b) clearly there are decades of service life left in them!
(How am I doing here Abscate??)

Thanks for breaking out the fine-toothed comb Skills!

I'm amazed at the major issues skills has uncovered here. Good finds!

Wonderful work, keep it up! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Highly entertained by this response (i know its all a jest). However, that is scary and very lucky that you didn't have a crispy bus at some point while driving.

The joys of working on 40-50 year old vehicles. This thing is gonna work so much better than new.

Not too worry... As I told Skills, it's cold enough driving igloo to igloo up here that wires are naturally cooled! Shocked

Engine conversions and especially going Subaru ruins busses they say... sure as heck seems to be saving a bus to me! And this is a bus in really good condition.... Eek!

Hope you like Canadian beer Skills! 🍻🍺

This picture above reminds me of what I found when I bought my 70' bus. I just started to check the basic stuff like all lights working, etc. There was a blown fuse under the dash. I popped in another, turned on the lights and the new fuse went off like fire cracker!

Looking at the wiring schematic, I traced the harness through the bus looking for a dead short. This harness is held above the rear engine compartment lid with metal tabs. As I pulled the harness down to inspect it, I found one of the clips had cut through the insulation after 45 years.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The worst part of techs today is I think about 90% of them don't catch stuff like this. If it isnt on the work order, why have that uncomfortable conversation with the customer that your car is pooched?

BMW did a NYS inspection on SWMBOs X3, passed it, and I did all four wheel brakes a week later. Inboard pads 0.5mm from rivets, outboard fat. Seized caliper piston inboard. Rotor rusty inboard, shiny outboard.

Now I only go back to buy ZW torque-to-yield hardware, eat the food in the customer lounge, and admire the size=IQ=1 front desk.

that's why it's called an estimate and not a grand total. thankfully after probably brow beating ride-on for 2 hours on the phone pre-swap to make sure he "got it", he knows dam well I have his best interests at heart. he is a hard working family man that wants his family to be as safe as possible while driving this old girl.

I take this shit seriously. anything I don't like will be brought to the attention of the owner. I know we keep joking about how nice this bus is despite the issues that I have uncovered, but truth be told this is the only original paint bus to date that I can see my retinas in the front floors. this bus has almost nothing noteworthy in the rust department. most of you guys out there in samba land would KILL for a bus this clean....I know I would.

so, any bus you don't have to spark a welder to and order 6K of gerson goodies is mint in my book, even if there is an "old age" issue here and there.

The fact that you are so truthful is what makes you a person to do business with. Also, Ride-On as the customer, must also know (which i'm sure he did) that doing work on something 40 years old is going to have things not seen for those years. It would be one thing if lied to up front, but that isn't what you do. I would do business with you if I was in your neck of the woods.

Well, hope you have power. I'm not sure what the weather is doing for you, but if you were losing power I can only imagine it isn't great.

Be safe Skills and I enjoy your write-ups and banter.

Thanks. I try to be as up front as possible. I miss stuff from time to time for sure...but it gets handled for sure.

Bus should be running tomorrow or Thursday. I have been working till 11pm to 1am most days trying to get this going, hence the lack of updates. This was far enough away from my usual swap I have had many issues to work thru. I will do a big picture dump eventually, but ride on and I have been in constant contact. Besides...I've done enough of these now that I am sure the forum is sick of the play by play I usually do

Skills:
I always learn a lot from reading your write-ups. Much of the information is beyond my level of comprehension since I'm still a newbie. But it always helps to build a little more knowledge each time, and eventually I understand.

So thanks for taking the time to post your accomplishments.

I am trying to make up for the week without power, but I will update this when time permits

ha!

so here are some pics. again, I have been in touch with Ride-On almost every day, several times a day. he knows what's what and really, that's whats important.

here it is...12:23am...again....and this seems to be the only free time I have. I haven't been posting because it just takes time, and that is something I really don't have at the moment

firewall painted and sound deadened

I had to build a VSS bracket. the top weld is a pin machined to fit into the trans case. one thing I have learned over the years is an ECU likes CLEAN signals. this is rock solid and will not twist had it only been bolted in one spot

if all goes well, I should be able to hit the key tomorrow....er later today. all in all there was a LOT more fab work compared to a 4 speed. every sketch, measurement and template was just about useless here. it ALL needed modification from my normal conversions. add the clutch master set up and man, did this conversion just e-a-t time. everything from the exhaust to the throttle cable had to be tweeked.....it was just insane how everything was juuuuust off enough to require a totally different approach.

in the end, I think it will be worth it. still, I am not a fan of the CV angle, and this is why I never went this way myself. the whole 5 speed thing is relatively new, and I was hoping someone else would put some miles on before I could see how the CV's can take the abuse. hopefully, it will all work out. it seems to be for others, so fingers crossed....

all that's left now is bleed the clutch, add fluids, hook up the heater lines, wire the VSS, pack the CV's, double/triple check everything bow toward japan and hit the key....probably forgetting something...I've been up for 19 hours now..
