|

I have a 1982 Rabbit diesel that has had the engine replaced. Earlier on this forum I was told of where to find identifying numbers and I cannot find any...and I have looked like Sherlock Holmes...anyway...need to obtain an alternator and in need of information of whether it is a 1.6 as originally was supposed to be in it or maybe a 1.7? It is a VW diesel engine obviously...doesn't look like it was hacked in. Any ideas? Sure would appreciate
it. |

There was only the 1.5 & 1.6 Diesel engines available in US market cars, the 1.7 was a gas engine.
Here is where the engine # should be.
Here is the displacement designation on the back of the block.
And in this case, there is also one on the front of the block.
It's not uncommon for engines to be swapped but the ancillaries usually got transferred due to mounting bracket differences.
There should be a number on the alternator & also if it's a Motorola or a Bosch.
DO NOT return your core until you know if the pulleys work, there are multiple different lengths & most are hard to find now. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Thanks so much...will look again ...but there is no flat spot near number 3 ...
also...you are so correct on the pulley...I have seen so many online...as I am new to the diesel and the Rabbits...this is getting very interesting...I have found that most of these alternators for the no AC variety seem to require a special order where I am so am very careful about getting the wrong one...
Oh well... this was supposed to be a winter project but I kinda just had to start
tinkering. Thanks again for the prompt response. |

Depending on which alternator that you have & the one that you get, the pulley can be swapped. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
