Tom Wilson's book shows:
311 101 371 B - '63-65 1500 Like Type1, 40 hp w/round rocker pedestals and breakage problem, but 33mm In. x 30mm Ex, carbureted head.
311 101 373 A - '66 1600, similar to above, but with square rocker pedestals, no breakage problems, single port, used on Type 1 - 3
He doesn't list a 311 101 371 without a letter |

Bill, are you implying that same casting numbers are used on different engines? Seems like a move an economy car company would do. _________________ Wash your hands

Hmmm, Jason I'm still not convinced that they're from a T3.

Nor am I. Jason needs to post conclusive evidence of his "it's a type 3 head" suggestion!
311 101 373A '67 - '70 15/1600cc single port 35.5mmx32mm
This is what I found on this head. I was looking for heads a few weeks ago and my understanding is the 311 101 373A was used on ALL single port engines that were 1500/1600. My bone stock 67 bug has it's original heads and engine case that have rebuilt obviously. The heads are the same 311 number. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

So type 1 parts start with 111
Type 2 starts with 211
Type 4 starts with 411
Thing starts with 181
So 311 must mean that it's a type 1 part. Makes sense. _________________ Wash your hands

But in all seriousness, I have noticed that there are a sizeable amount of parts with the 311 prefix that are used when they spread across bugs, buses and the lot of type 3s _________________ Wash your hands

Engine is going in a '69 bus.... Since the Type 3's were dual ports then, I'm going to say these are bus heads, mostly cause that's where I'm putting them now. I'll fight you guys.
Plus the REAL reason I wanted 311 part numbers...

Random rumblings..
I thought the first three represented the Type on which the part was first used.
Later on, if it is used on a different Type, I don't think it makes it a Type 3 part, it makes it a Type 1 and Type 3 part _________________ .ssS! |

For reals? You guys were being for real?
I thought the 311 PN prefix was common knowledge? As well as the fact that parts from different models are spread about where and when needed. Guess not
And the last little sweetheart for Robbie - by 1967 all US import T3s had dual port heads. But the rest of the world still had motor options. So believe it or not you could get a late model - right through 1973 - single port, single side draft carb 1600cc motor in your notch, fasty or square. If we are talking just US then you sir can now take ownership of the 311 head and call it just for busses from 68 through 71. Globally then it remains a T3 again as they were used on T3 creations out of Brazil through at least 79. Then after that it went to buses and bugs Id bet. But now who cares as its now not German made.
Luv you man! _________________

Next you're going to say you could get a Thing with swing axle suspension, or a split window bus with U-joint axles. Or a bug with no chrome. _________________ Wash your hands
