my understanding is that some of the T3 motors were performance motors - 1500 with higher compression and performance. One probably wants to look at the combustion chambers in the heads to see if they were made for a domed piston. Frankly we are pushing a rock uphill on this one I think. Robbie's bus is almost 50 years old so if one wants a perfectly matching stock parts number engine they will have to scour every corner of the globe and spend lots of $$ to find all those perfectly matching parts. Then the next question is why did almost everyone post 1971 want to convert their single port internal oil cooler engine to a dog house dual port engine...

Correct.

SGKent, I originally went single port because the quality of available rubber dual port boots could not keep up with my travel schedules. Then my "butt dyno" tests feel that the single ports have a lower power band than a dual port, which means spending less time at high RPMs between shifts in the mountains. The only reason I would go dual port is if I go T1 fuel injection, which won't happen until they run out of carburetors......

I've been running the doghouse cooler setup on a single port engine since I built it, and it's a perfect combo for what I need- Economical, easy, and smooooooooth.

1964 & 1965 has the 1500 S motor or the dohmed 83mm pistons. The 371 B cylinder head is correct for that time. It also uses the shorter top row case studs. So if unless you have a bus case where someone pulled the top row of studs and put the shorter ones on like a 1500 then Id think you would be fine.

When I did the clean up on my 1500 S for the 64 notch I went back to this lesser head as it worked fine before I pulled it apart and I didn't want to deal with the stud issue to use my other later heads. Lazy quick option won out. Confused

I know right. I can't believe you guys don't know this 101 VW stuff Think

I may have to call for a council of the highest order. Pull everyone in for a beer to speak of this.

And in defence of some of the younger crowd. I have been a Type 3 A-Hole since I was 14. Im 46 now. Bus affascinato - always but an owner since 2010 is all.

Good explanation here. They were used first in '66 on the T3 the '67 thru '70 in the T2. Everybody is right...

It says " first on the 67 type 3 and on the 71 type 2 and that's what I remember as the 67 1600 type 3 came with the dual port heads and I was using those plus switching to the dual port manifolds on the rebuilds I did back then.

Part numbers from the bay bus parts book, reminding us that not all bus parts start with a number two:

Crankcase: 113 101 025
Flywheel: 311 105 271
Cylinder head: 311 101 353A
Door lock release lever: 411 837 072

I have bigger fish to fry than this shit. If you need me, I'll be waxing the pedals, detailing the dashboard screws, and making sure my firewall screws are painted white. You know, stuff that matters more than the bug that these heads came off of…

d'oh!

I would think a part that was designed and first to be used on would get the "Type" tag. For no other reason than that because its used on it first AND has the PN on it.

The Type 3 heads on a Bay window bus is truly an acceptable and apt part to use. Type 3 dont get no respect either. Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing

I do agree with the fact that the Type 3 heads are for both - T3 and Bus. But its still a T3 head used on a bus Cool Or to feel better just say its an inter changeable part used on some other ACVW's as well Laughing

Im going to polish off a beer. Y'all can go polish some knobs as needed. Boo hoo! :2gunfire:
