I feel you, Ray! My "excellent Irish liver" (McCarthy over here!) is on par with my bus; it shouldn't be alive but it just keeps on going just as it always does……

They are Mahle dished pistons and cylinders. I am giving them a shot, because they are one quarter of the price of the NOS Kolbenschmidt P/C set I bought three years ago with a damaged fin. Yes they are made in Brazil, but they are in my price range and so far the balance has been within .3 grams (AirCooled.net balanced them for me before shipping, so I wouldn't deal with the 10g offset out of the box like some AA sets come.) The ring end (in cylinder) gaps have all been on the tighter side of spec, and the ring side (in piston) gaps have all been right in the middle of spec. I have no reason to doubt them yet.
--
Brian isn't lying; I am working on the engine tonight! I did have to take two tenths of a gram off one piston to get it to my standards, but other than that, we're wiped down with oil, engraved for final placement, and will be filing off the casting flash tomorrow or Saturday. Paint comes later.
Brian, however fun he may sound online, has been the King of the Exhaust Studs on multiple engines belonging to my family. Here he is tonight, with his theme song and an M8 die with a tube of 20w50.
Link
Here he is two years ago on my mom's engine, during a minor refresh of everything but the long block. We stripped an exhaust stud, and it was 11pm on Sunday night, so nothing was open in time to get the engine running and delivered.
Link
And with that, I'm wrapping these heavy boys up and hitting the brews.

I love seeing 20 somethings with such a passion for these old VW's. Maybe there's a chance that people will be around in 20-30 years that can still work on these VW's correctly. The knowledgeable folks today are not getting any younger. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I've been meaning to rip a copy of the album for a while, and I will once I get my audio interface equipment back in a few weeks. I'll post it in the appropriate forums here and in this thread.

You balance the cylinders and pistons as well? That's serious!
As for the 20 something comment, if everyone with a kid buys them a VW then the kids will have the nostalgia as we all do. My first car was a Beetle. Why do you think I have so many now? Everyone else has a VW story too. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

I balance the pistons, wrist pins, and clips together. And I do keep the pistons in the cylinders then came out of. The rings came in a separate baggie, and I can not ascertain any measurable difference in ring gaps or lands, so I'm not assigning them to any particular cylinder just yet.

Last year when I put my little home scale up against a $1,600 precision setup, it was within .2 grams total, and each responded identically to removal/addition of wrist pins. I'm not going to say it's perfect, but .2 grams is well within my tolerance window, considering the factory allowance was FIVE GRAMS difference between the pistons.
Too bad I burned all my bridges at the old job so I can't go back and use their scale………

This is how all engines should be built. He’ll also balance the connecting rods and the crank, flywheel and clutch will all be sent out to be balanced. If you want smooth these are the steps. _________________ __________

Why would you balance the cylinders? They're not moving parts.
I weigh all the rod assemblies with pins and bearings first, then the assembled pistons. I match light pistons to heavy rods, etc., then balance all the assemblies by filing metal off the heaviest one (s) to match the lightest assembly.
The other thing I do is use an old shitty tire bubble balancer to balance the clutch drive plate (pressure plate) to the flywheel by moving the position of the plate on the fly to where it is most closely balanced, then making a mark on each to match up on assembly. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Thanks Brian, Was just thinking I should modernize my scale. Currently using these that I my dad picked up in Burma 30 years ago. Yes Robbie that's what you saw on my mantle
https://m.ebay.com/itm/Set-of-6-Antique-Burmese-Br...Sw~RVaBKiF
And, no. I'm not using them for that. Dad was the worlds leading authority of Parenteral Admixtures and collected cool shit _________________ Keep on Busin'

Pot isn’t precise enough. My scale was recommended by a gentleman with a nasal problem.
Also remember to shave off the pressure plate bolts and washers to zero them out on the scale. Or index them with the balancing. If you do that last one, get ready for whatever the machinist equivalent is to spitting in your food is.
I also have a “welded and balanced” fan from Berg, but there are no balance marks, and it came with significant axial runout. So it’s good for 5k engine RPM, but it wobbles until I “persuaded” it into shape.
