Bought this '51 from Sweden some months ago.
It's been off the road since 1964 so it had a pretty short life.
Afterwards it has been 'parked' at a swamp in northern Sweden, among with some other cars.
Don't know exactly how long it had been there before it got pulled out there some months ago.
What was left was basically the chassis/body with 2 OG fenders, decklid, doors.
Missing running gear, interior, instruments, etc..
Most parts I already got.
Swamp/forest Picture
Some pictures of the ad
and some pictures when I got it home
Going to fix the rust and drive it as is
Regards

Most of the 'bolt-on' parts have some major dents and need serious re-shaping.
Last year I collected some front split fenders of a forest wreck.
I knew they would come in handy one day, even though they are really f*cked
A guy I know, called Simon, is helping me out with these parts.
The skills he has are just incredible!
I'm really grateful for all his effort.
Some before and afters
Decklid:
The first license plate was painted on the decklid, pretty cool I think..
Rear Fenders:

Front fenders:

Bumper:
Did I say he was really good?

Very nice work. I bet he could make the center ridge of the rear lid even better, with time. The caved in roof must be a PITA, though.
I had my (much newer) beetle rear fender dented by a hit an run about 20 yrs ago. Instead of fitting a new chinese crap knock-off, I took it to an old panel beater. With no filler, he beat it back to perfection. He said it was a joy to work on proper low-carbon steel, which was ideal for panel work. Nice and thick 0.7 mm. _________________ 1973 1303S w sunroof Click to view image

Sick metal work and hammering the creases back out!
I have the same issues on the jack mounts and rear apron.
Cant wait to see more. |

My Plan is to use a rather interesting engine for this build
This summer a neighbour of a friend of mine told that he had some vw engine parts laying in his backyard shed.
He told him the engine was used in an airplane.
If he could carry the box he could have them for free.
In the box he found a complete dismantled engine, with okrasa heads..
His first tought was that it was a 34/40hp engine/ because of the lack of a fixed generator stand on the engine case.
He decided to sell everything at HO to fund some other projects.
When I kept looking at it at HO I realised that it was a 30/36hp engine with the generator stand cut off and I bought the engine from him.
Some guys at HO already gave me some better insight of the parts that were in the box but here is what I know already from it.
It's a STAMO 1400 engine made by the german company STARK.
34 of these engines were made for lightweight airplanes from 1959.(according to wikipedia at least)
Example of an airplane with this kind of engine in it
Engine
Specs of the engine ( correct me if i'm wrong)
30hp engine case: Bored for larger cylinders, bored for camshaft bearings
Case has casting date of '58
Okrasa heads: modified for twin spark
356 pre-A 1500S 80mm Chromal cylinders
356a 74mm crankshaft and rods
Central 32ndix carburator
356 fuel pump
So it's actually a 1500 engine instead of 1400
Anyone recognize these stamps?
Most parts look to be in pretty decent condition but some things need work.
Some cooling finns are broken on the heads, crank has some surface rust and some other stuff.
Everything is send out to be checked so I know what will be involved.
A dpr lightened and 8-dowelled flywheel I already bought for it.
Regards

Great metal work. It is amazing what patience can do to what most would consider "junk" metal parts. Bending, pulling and hammer and dollying something back to nearly perfect shape is very rewarding. The MIG/TIG patching in your pics looks very well done too. Keep the pics coming!! _________________ John Henry
