Earlier this summer I changed jobs, It's a better job but my commute went from 66 miles round trip to 168. My full size pickup was not going to cut it so I picked up a 1981 diesel caddy.

It came with tons of parts and even a spare motor that had fresh gaskets and a reconditioned head.

The spare engine had nice cross hatching so I put a little oil on top of the pistons and rolled it over a few times.

It runs fine but it's nice to have the backup engine. I drove it around town a bit to find any bugs that need fixing. I located a 5 speed from another diesel to replace the 4 speed. I found a set of BBS wheels from an old BMW on craigslist.

I have been liking those VW pickups for awhile now. Seems like the prices are still affordable.

Sidenote:. You added 102 miles to your work commute in exchange for what? Do you do this each day? That's an extra 1.5 - 2 hours of driving a day.

I traded the short commute for a company with longer scope of work, More room for pay advancement, and I already had a good relationship with the people there when I was a contractor. I'm happier overall. Seattle is just like San Francisco, New York city, and I am sure there are other cities where nobody can afford to live there. People live elsewhere and commute to the city. I have almost enough work to carry me to retirement. Cool

It's been a little while since an update. I picked up a GTI grill on craigslist and added a chin spoiler.

Then I replaced the struts and added some H&R sport springs in the front.

Now I'm fabricating some drop plates for the rear to level it out.
